Expansion tank died at 311,000
Hey Guys,
My expansion tank finally died at 311,000 or so. Yesterday it sprung a small leak. Got a new one on its way this morning and she will be back on the road and logging miles. Cheers |
Wally,
You should mail it in to BMWNA, and they would probably put it on display at the SC museum. :D Pretty remarkable for a plastic jug to go that long both mileage and time-wise, with the high ambient surrounding temps, and hot liquid it holds. BR, mD |
Damn expansion tank, couldn't even make it to 325,000 miles. ;)
We would be lucky to replace an expansion tank at 311,000. |
Wow! That is seriously longevity on your expansion tank! Did you pick up another OEM for the next 311k?

i don't think op implied miles! more accurate would be seconds.... 311000 seconds it blew.... sounds about right!
|
It probably helps that Wally is in WA, where it's cooler.

I'm not sure what I'm more impressed with, the tank lasting that long or the high mileage overall.
If you're ever bored you should document what components failed or were replaced and when. You might very well have the mileage record here and your experiences would be like a guide to us with young X5s with "only" 100,000 miles or so. ;) |
Add to that the fatigue of expansion and contraction due to pressure changes. My 2002 X5 had 123,000 miles when I replaced it 2 weeks ago. Got one on ebay for $35.00 new.

Mine went at 60k. I guess that's one of the differences living somewhere where it gets near ambient 120 degrees in the summer! :)
