Help Identify x5 gearbox
Hi
Need some help identifying the gearbox in this x5. It is a 2003/12 3.0 diesel. Anyone have a clue? My mechanic seems to think that is maby from a earlier model x5? http://www.xoutpost.com/members/alex...5-img-1187.jpg http://www.xoutpost.com/members/alex...3-img-1185.jpg http://www.xoutpost.com/members/alex...4-img-1188.jpg |
What does the green tag on it say?
Transmissions changed with the 2004 model year start of production (from 5 speed to 6 speed). That happened around September/October 2003. So, is your 12/2003 a build date, or a purchase date? |
Ok, i think mine has a 5speed gearbox, at least i have never seen it in 6th gear when in manual mode.

Not strange. GM built the A5S390R transmission for BMW and the 3.0d up through September 2003 (based on the parts book).
So, is 12/2003 your purchase date or your build date from the label on the door jamb? |
Your transmission nameplate should look like this then. In the top RH corner the code will probably be XW (rather than GA in the diagram). The 5 refers to the year of manufacture (so yours will be a 3 for 2003) and the G below this means its a 5L40-E and not a 5L50-E (the equivalent letter for the 5L50-E being a Z). The BMW part number will be on there too in the blank box probably 7 518 605.
