Has anyone had to replace intake manifold?

My 06 4.8is won't start and the BMW mechanic I took it to replaced a drive motor for variable intake. The vehicle still doesn't start and he said it may need a new intake manifold and that would cost $1900. Has anyone heard of this before? My X5 has 56k miles and was running fine until last week when it stalled. By the way he charged me $360 for the drive motor for variable intake which I didn't need. Should I have to pay him for that?:(

Did you/he check the fuel pump?

I don't know if he checked the fuel pump or not, he just kept saying there is a problem with the air intake manifold. It is at the BMW dealership now, I will find out when they get to it.

If your intake manifold is crack or leak your car still started, but runs very rough.

Try the most common failure items first. I haven't had any problems with the intake manifold. If you did then it would more likely be a manifold gasket leak than a cracked manifold. More likely than all of that are the intake pieces before the throttle body.

I'd ask for your old part back since it was not the root cause of your problem and is likely still good.

And try some diagnosis yourself, then if you have to go to a different mechanic.

If it just won't run at all, the first thing I would try is the MAF disconnect test. It take a few seconds to try it.
