Shifter question

Hey guys have a 2001 x 3.0. Had a tranny replaced about 2 weeks ago and it's great. Only one small snag that I can't get my head around. The shifter works fine, but after a while, the light on the dash goes out, no P R N D and if i push the shifter forward a bit it shows D again and all is well. Sometimes it will be in drive and show S-4 on the dash. I did get under it and tried to adjust the shifter cable and not much change. There was a little play in the cable, so I am not sure if it is a Shifter I need or do I need to get the tranny reprogrammed? It was not reprogrammed during the install.

Thoughts ???

Bring it to the shop who did the work. Since it was so recent, I'd say they'd fix it for free...

I tried that, they adjusted the shifter and it didn't work, so I tried myself and couldn't get it to stay where I needed it. Seems to be ok going back to drive, but going back to park it sometimes will stay in R even though it is in P

Makes me think shifter cable, but not 100% And since the shifter cable is part of the shifter, it's a costly fix so I wanted to check here first.
