Decision time-- Need advice!
 

Sooo,

My mom may be getting a new car, she currently has a 2002 4.6is (100k miles) in silver.. So I thought, ok, we will sell that. Until, my father presented me with this option. Sell my 2004 4.4i (98k miles) and I can have the 4.6is...

I'm stuck.. I LOVE my 4.4i. I've put tons of sweat and small mods into it (including my rims, lights, steering wheel, tints, etc). And my moms 4.6is is "mom-ified" there's no denying that the 4.6 is a better beast than my 4.4.. But, my car has a special connection to me.. Plus being facelifted..

What would you do?

Oh I also want to consider value. From my estimates, these cars are worth about the exact same..

If you take the 4.6, do you get the money if you sell your 4.4? I'd keep the 4.4 if you don't get money for selling it....

Nope. I get zero money.. Except for selling my wheels, etc..

So you are basically asking should you buy your parents car off them?

Nope, just do a swap. I'm still in college. Don't need to buy anything. My dad would sell my car (technically under his name) and let me have the 4.6is.

Sell the 04 and keep the 4.6Is.

Naz let's get real now, I know it wasn't your daddy that presented you with this "option", you know it was you who presented this to them.

Anyhow, if your 4.4 has that much sentimental value to you, I suggest you keep it. Although, your mom's 4.6 is "mommyfied" as you state, then it should be in great condition also. As far as what you've put into your 4.4, it can easily be forgotten/reapplied to your moms 4.6. If you sell your rims, you will have cash to tint out the 4.6 and some left over to buy the carbon pillars. The only thing you will need to do, is bake/heatgun the headlights and add AE's or go Depo or MrBMWx5. Also, I know you have thought about adding front and rear 4.6is/4.8is spoilers and arched fender flares to your 4.4, now you don't have to retrofit.. I am sure that you have washed, clayed and waxed your moms 4.6 before so the outer conditions should be about the same as your 4.4. Also, its not like your going from a X5 to a Ford Explorer, your doing BMW for BMW(with more power).

No disrespect, but you are one lucky sumbitch who will still be "Kissing French (off craigslist), Wearing Italian and Driving German".

Sell the 04 and get the 4.6is. That way, you won't be driving a car that's been through the ringer (the 04 through college life). I would much have a mom driven car than a car that me and my friends have trashed. No matter how much I respect my car, I still find that friends do stupid things in it that I can't keep an eye on.

If that's your argument, then I'd have to disagree. My car doesn't have the typical college car life. She still gets hand washed once a week and barely have idiots in it..

Keep the 4.4 Naz. Unless you have the time, enthusiasm and $$ to mod the 4.6

I think it sounds like you take excellent care of your X, so I wouldn't consider that as part of the equation. I'm partial to 4.6 purely based on appearance and a slight performance edge; however, I think the pluses are greater for you to keep your 4.4. You know it better, it's newer, it's facelifted, it's probably worth more (or at least would be easier to sell in the future), it has your mods already on it, and probably the best part is you don't have any work to do haha. I wouldn't blame you for either choice, but I think the smarter decision is sticking with the 4.4.

That's a tough call, although personally I greatly prefer the 4.6is over a 4.4i no matter how modified and face lifted or not.

But I've read that your car has been hit and beat up by people as you park at Cornell. For example, you complained about kids folding mirrors and lifting up the wipers and chipping the paint. Then there are the parking lot mishaps causing a misaligned front bumper that your mom's car probably doesn't have.

My father seems to be leaning on me taking the 4.6is just because its fully fully loaded 100% options. Mine doesnt have all the options that the 4.6 does.

Ya - so white on black makes it a tougher one. I like that combo too, better than silver on black and it is rare too. Still I would rather have a 4.6is all told...

Here is my .05 worth. I own both a 4.4 and a 4.6. Both are 03s with 103k and 89k miles respectively. The 4.4 has proven to have better dependability, better mileage and not as expensive to maintain.

You gotta love the 4.6 tho, it is classic, more rare, more fun to drive, and has a much higher cool quotient .

How about you run an add with both cars pictured, ask the same price with full disclosure for both and let the buyer determine which one you keep. Let's say 4 out of 5 potential buyers are more interested in the 4.6 then that is the one you keep.

id take the 4.6is....meaner looking car. and rare car...4.4i loved it....if i have the option...id take the spoiler and bumpers of 4.6is..and transfer it to 4.4i..and just pay for paint..that way you have the 4.4 still and have still sentimental on it...

well you have previously expressed a preference for the 4.8is so what is 0.2 liter between friends .
the 2 axle air suspension could be a hassle on a 4.8 Haggis

Go with your gut. The 4.6 is a great ride but your 04 is newer. less mpg with the 4.6. i would go 4.6

Get an IS.

Whichever one I choose will be sitting in the garage for 5 months starting in January. Going abroad.

I need to detail and drive the 4.6 this weekend and see how I feel. My 4.4i is at Morristown BMW getting fixed...

Somebody make me an offer for one of them!!

swap everything from the 4.6 into the 4.4 and then sell the 4.6 body with 4.4 parts. best of both worlds. jk

You're going to miss one of them leaving, that's for sure, but which one most? Sounds like you need a coin to flip. The pain of seeing someone driving a twin of the one that you chose to sell isn't fun, but, would be lessened if you saw it while driving the 4.6. Take the knowledge learned in the time of owning your 4.4 and apply that towards the care of the much rarer bird. IMH(biased)O. If nothing else, look at this situation as a win/win. :)
