Sport Mode on my X5...

I have a 2006 X5 4.4L ...when I tap my shifter to the left and put it on m/s (sport mode) and not shifting up or down, leaving it on "S" what changes are made to the auto?

Yii 10-06-2011 11:06 PM

I think the program changes. Car computer isnt really worried about gas consumption and focuses on max output so gas will be consumed faster. not too sure what else is changed but i think my gears shift differently and my exhaust sounds a little louder or so. Not sure if this is all in my head but that's just what i noticed.

What it does is like when you're driving a stick, u wanna push it to the highest rpm possible before shifting to the next gear. in step tronic you are in Sport Mode and it wont shift to the next gear unless u step on the gas.. hope this makes sense..

JCL 10-07-2011 02:09 AM

Since the OP asked about S mode, and not M mode, all it does is shift at a higher rpm. That is to say, it holds a gear longer as you accelerate, instead of shifting to the next higher gear. Byproducts of that are that it makes more noise and consumes more fuel.

Helmuth 10-07-2011 07:17 AM

.... and the delay between pushing the pedal and the acceleration is much less - at least on mine.

JCL 10-07-2011 11:11 AM

Unlike some models (ie my Z4 had a sport button that changed throttle response electronically), throttle response in the X5 doesn't change, but the fact that the engine is often running at a higher rpm in S mode means that it will respond differently when you push the throttle down.

FB4 10-07-2011 11:52 AM

so is there a good time and/or a bad time to be using Sport Mode?

Yii 10-07-2011 01:58 PM

if you don't mind using up allot of gas than.... ITS ALWAYS A GOOD TIME TO USE SPORT :D. have you given it a try b4? its pretty fun

Hi JCL,

interesting. On mine is a huge difference on throttle response between D and S. Most when I accelerate from a stop. So I do not think it is only related to higher RPM.

JCL 10-07-2011 02:09 PM

The sport mode on the transmission doesn't connect to the throttle.

From a standing start, what you experience can be related to which gear the transmission is starting out in.

Yii 10-07-2011 02:10 PM

amazing how a change in shifting can make such a huge difference in feel, just makes me appreciate everything is designed and work

Helmuth 10-07-2011 02:32 PM

In D I have a loooong delay which is not there in S. Any idea what that is?

JCL 10-07-2011 03:14 PM

Not too familiar with the auto box on the diesels, but is it starting off in second gear in D?

Helmuth 10-07-2011 03:37 PM

It is simply taking to long for my feeling. If there is some traffic on a crossing I always need to change to S before accelerating from zero. Otherwise I have really to much delay. Maybe a second - but that is long.

MINIz guy 10-07-2011 05:38 PM

Placebo effect, maybe? When I pay attention to the throttle lag, I notice it takes much too long. When I don't pay attention, I never complain about how my throttle lags.

D/S

Just got my x5 and knew I had this option but never used it until I saw this thread. Jumped in the SAV and gave it a whirl. Big difference a lot more pep! Def is burning a lot more fuel. Keeps the rpm's around 4. But thanks for the thread I'll be using it all the time now!

ArmyX5 10-08-2011 08:22 PM

I have being using the Sport mode for so long that that is the only mode I place my transm. on everything I get in my truck. Once you try it, there is not going back.;)

When you are in S it tells the computer in the car to change to a different set of parameters(stiffen the rear shocks if it is a v8, to increase the throttle response, to hold a gear shift to be longer, to increase the pulls with on the injectors, to give a bit more timing and to increase the voltage to the coils). With the Mx5 it will give it another 50-100 hp.

This isn't an X5M with an M button being discussed here, it is simply the transmission shift mode (standard, sports, or manual) on the automatic transmission. It just affects the transmission shift points.

I'm pretty sure JCL is right about this.

Diesel will often try to start in 2nd. Using Sport means it will always start in 1st.

Sundayjumper 10-10-2011 07:32 AM

IIRC it also blocks the torque converter clutch from engaging - again keeping the revs higher.
