Blue Smoke right exhaust only
Hello everyone;
Wife drives a 2005 X5 4.4i, about a year ago we had the PCV valves replaced because every time she would be at a running the car for a while and would come to a stop it would poof blue smoke, it got a little better right after we changed the PCV valves but now is a lot worse, it even does it when the car just idles, and is only on the passenger's exhaust, when she comes to a stop then takes off a lot of smoke. So i asked the guy that fixed it before, and said he can't think of anything else other then the valves. I did a some reading here, and most of the post mention the Oil seperator, would that be the next thing to check on the car? I need some advice on what could be next. Thanks! |
I would suggest a leak down test to see if your rings or seals are bad.

ok, good start.
assuming no problems found on the test, what could be next? |

If it turns out to be the valve stem oil seals you can add a product to your oil which conditions the seals .
many people have had lasting results . |

I have the same problem the OP described and I went down the same route of replacing the PCV valve because the guy said it was "sticky" and likely the source of the problem. However, I just saw the smoke again a few days ago!
@TiAgX5 - What product are you talking about to recondition the seals? |
LubroMoly LubeGuard for one. Just be aware that BMW states that "NO oil additives are approved" for use in their vehicles.

Thanks!

Hi folks,
My X started consuming a lot of oil. Once this happened I would get a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust after idle. Diagnosis was valve stem seals. So I have just started trying an additive that conditions the seals, in Oz its Nulon ESL. I heard positive results from some 7 series N62 owners but have also heard horror stories from non BMW owners. However I am happy to report that so far so good. I have driven 300 km so far and apparently takes full affect at 500 but already my car has almost stopped smoking altogether. Me happy :D |
