Stupid F&#king signs
 

Backed up into a sign today in the parking garage-- Left me a nice little nick on my bumper. I was thinking the easiest way to fix this was to sand with 2000 grit and use some touch up...

I'm up at school, dont have my touch up paint.. no supply stores carry the BMW AW touch up paint either. Closest bmw dealer is in syracuse (>1 hour away).

I guess i just gotta look at this everytime i get in my car now until i go home..


Any other recommendations on how to fix DIY style?

Awe man, little stuff like this drives me crazy.

Try backing into your parking spot until you can get it fixed. That way you wont see it every time you walk up to your car and you will be less likely to back into any more signs.

some dealers will post the paint to you .800 grit will be quicker and is necessary to provide the correct key for new paint to adhere .
build up the paint with the touch up stick and allow to dry for a few days ( heat , for example from a hairdryer if you can borrow one from your gf will dry paint quickly ) .the paint will shrink .
use 1500 grit wrapped around a pencil or similar to flatten new paint level with original paint , you can use 2000 grit near end of process .it will look dull . you can clearcoat at this stage and then flatten with 2000 grit .
use T- cut scratch remover or similar ( but not rubbing compound ) to polish paint then use a fine polish then wax .

make sure you use the touch up paint in ambient temp so drying is correct. good luck

That does suck. The only thing worse than you being responsible for backing into a sign post is when some d!ckhead has moved a traffic barricade behind your vehicle and you back into thinking there is nothing there. (Yes, someone did that to me.)

Many people swear by LANGKA Paint Chip and Scratch Repair but I don't have personal experience with it.

I've used the Langka kit but would rather just buy a small bottle of paint at Paintscratch and DIY. Take a small brush and brush some paint on, then come by with something like 1000 grit and work up to 2000 grit sandpaper until you finish off with some polish. I kept on removing the paint in the scratch with the supplied Langka paint thinner -- just do the old fashioned way and you'll have good success.

My thoughts exactly. Do you think I should put the paint in first then sand? Or sand, add paint, then sand again?

I also bought a primer from Paintscratch which I applied first. I cleaned the area, then primered it, then applied the paint. Then I sanded once the paint was dry and cured.

The BMW paint stick probably won`t need primer .
remember to soak the wet & dry sandpaper for 15 minutes before use .
you can add a small amount of car shampoo to warm water . don`t use dish detergent , it has salt added .

Be very thankful that you did not back into Bright Red BMW! (I'm now wearing that t-shirt, thank you). My incident barely put a scratch on my bumper, but somehow caused a $2800 insurance repair to the kidney grill of an e36 3-series?!? The guy clearly took advantage; He must have painted his whole f&#king car courtesy of my insurance... or spent $300 on the actual repair and pocketed the rest. Bastard!

OK enough of my rant... and I'm sorry about your misfortune.

PS. I bought a back-up camera after that disaster!

Gixxer-- oh yeah, i can imagine a jackass doing something like that. Thank the lord it was just a sign, and not a tree hugging prius driver (we see a lot of them up here in ithaca) tryin to take advantage of a jersey boy with a shiny BMW
