One-year anniversary!

I just realized that I've owned my '03 X5 for one full year now! I thought I'd share a little summary of my experience this past year.

64,500 miles when purchased
79,000 miles one year later = 14,500 miles of average/sporty driving

Services performed (in chronological order):

battery replaced (DIY)
rear right taillight soldered (DIY)
Inspection II
coolant flush
all fluids changed
front passenger window regulator replaced
stereo headunit replaced (screen stopped working)
radiator replaced (leak)
transmission thermostat replaced (broke when mechanic replaced the radiator)
front left outer CV boot replaced
front rotors and brake pads replaced
oil change
front suspension service: sway bar links, thrust arm bushings, and ball joints replaced (sloppy response and clunking noise)
final stage resistor replaced (DIY)

Combined cost of service: about $3,200 using my local indy mechanic and doing the easy stuff myself (DIY). This forum has saved me a lot of money because of the diagnosis threads and great How To's. Big thanks to all of the forum contributors here.

I knew all along that a 7 year-old BMW was going to need several repairs, but it's still frustrating to deal with. I'll be honest, buying a more reliable car has crossed my mind, but dammit I love the ride. I like driving in general and my X rolls like a dream. The maintenance all feels worth it when I'm smashing down a smooth road and it feels like gliding, and when I'm plowing through snow without a worry in my mind. I think the general rule is that your vehicle's repair costs are worth the money as long as you still enjoy driving it. I hope that no major repairs are needed in Year 2. Wish us luck.

Glad to hear you love it. Does seem like a decent amount of repairs though.

I love the color--still one of my favorites
