how does dealer determine trade in value?
 
we want to trade our 2002 X5 in on a 2008 5 series.

what 'book' do they use to determine value?

BMW dealer in so cal.....

I don't know if it's USA-wide but, as far as I know, they use Galves (and not Kelley Blue Book or others that could give higher values).

2002 trade in is around 5000. better luck selling that thing privately

IMHO if your car is in reasonably good mech and cosmetic condition you should have no problem selling it yourself...plenty of people looking for "affordable" X5's

They also look at auction values via Manheim.. Because if they cant sell it on the lot, guess where the dealer is sending it?!

Most dealers in my area use NADA yellow or blank books. Kelly Blue Book is rarely used.

it's a 2002 4.4 w/ sport package and it has 150k miles. no mech issues. the LCD display under the gauge is out though.

Edmunds thinks trade is 6.5, private 8 and retail 10.
