Major problems!!!
 

So....I am a new BMW x5 owner I bought the x5 a month ago from a family friend....and well let's just say it been bad luck since....about a week ago my car didn't start, so naturally I thought it was either the battery or alternator, after checking both I was lost, so I took it to BMW to get the diagnostic test, and after a day I got the worst news.....major leaking!!! There are two coolant leaks, both washer fluid leaks, power steering leak, oil leaks in two places, mass air flow sensor not working, sensor from steering wheel to wheels faulty, front right cv boot problem....add it all up jus to fix it to make it safe and operable to drive is between $6000-6700 !!!!!! I got the 2001 BMW x5 for $11,000 and I got a warranty....needless to say the warranty won't cover jack!!! I've been fighting with them for the past week and they said they will get back to me and see if they will cover some stuff.....I contacted the previous owner and he has had it periodically checked and there was no problems.......!!! So maybe it was bad luck or a very big mistake....let me know what you guys think or if you have any ideas on what to do.....the dealership is giving me the price they would give the warranty co. Which is cheaper..so they say, they offered me a trade in value of $4500-5000!!!!! Should I take it and lose $6000 or get it fixed and sell it later for a lower loss?

Please any help would be nice.....I wish I still had my scion tc!!!!
Much easier and cheaper to fix!!!! However I loved the x5 while I had it.......I would love to keep it!!! At least till the scion frs or a newer BMW....when I can afford one!

Is there any point to the thread?
Or is it just a rant?

A little bit of both I guess.... Jus trying to see what other think I should do in my situation...I love the x5 and would hate to get rid of it....but for a loss of $6000- $6500 is it worth it....I'm sorry if it feels like it's all a rant...to be honest I don't know what to do

You need to go to an independent repair shop. There is no way all that crap is leaking that bad. It won't start because one little thing isn't working...you just need an honest mechanic to find out what that is and get it running.

You can get parts on the internet pretty cheap too.

Get a 2nd opinion.

My car is CPO so I didn't have a problem with dealers until I fell for an advertisement in local flier that dealer would do "oil change, air filter, tire rotate and winter prep for $79!". MY cel light was on and as a "courtesy" they would "take a look and tell me what it was". (it literally went on that morning)

4 hours later I get a call and that "there was some bad news". I can dig out the list but according to dealer I needed $2,750 in work to get her sea-worthy. I ignored it, added fuel injector cleaner, turned off cel w/scan tool and have had no problems since. That was about a year ago.

Best part was the "$79" ended up being $160! Still can't figure that one out.

There may be some items you can set aside.

Buying a car from a friend; I would never do it, nor sell to a friend.
And, a couple hundred buck PPI would have turned up some/most of those repair items.
Ask your 'friend' for some of your dough back to cover some of the repairs.

+1 on the second opinion from a reputable indi.

Not accusing the dealer who gave the estimate of anything but I hear stories about dealers (not just BMW) who try to scare customers into questionable repairs.. Recently I spoke with an acquaintance who is the service manager at a BMW dealership. He was telling me that the pressure on the service department to meet revenue targets at his dealeship has intensified over the past couple years. I think this type of pressure drives the wrong behavior.

Another +1 on looking for an Indie. I needed some work done on my X5 and BMW was charging nearly $3 grand as where my Indie did the same work for about a grand. Good luck!

As for your friend...he didn't do anything wrong since it ran fine when he had it and your X5 will probably give you several good years of service once you get this ironed out.
