Sold my 2004 4.8iS last week, it was on just over 112k miles.
Took quite a hit on what I was able to sell it for compared to what I paid 18 months ago, partly due to the previous owner lying about 2 faults. I can't say I'll miss it, I don't think BMW's are for me. Perhaps I'm being unfair, it was the 1st Beemer I've owned in the 20+ cars I've had, and can't see me wanting another. That probably sounds quite salty , maybe I'm just less patient these days. Hopefully my Panda 100hp, which is quite the contrast to a V8 X5, will give me less grief :p: |

Actually there were 10 models on my list, but when he found some to look at/into, and to describe them to me, the X5 moved to the top (though I saw the S-10 as a sentimental favorite, after owning a 2wd S-10 extended cab pickup for almost 20 years). It took him over 3.5 years to get it to a tradeable condition (nearly all systems rebuilt). No regrets, so far, but I always wanted a BMW, loved the first-gen E53 styling from day-one, and never had an SUV (SAV) or AWD/4WD before, so it ticked-off a few boxes on my wish list, at one time. I've had just about every car, truck, engine, etc. that I'd wanted, previously, so why not an old E53? |
That's funny workingonit, when we decided to buy a camper trailer in 2016 we first bought a 2001 Grand Cherokee to tow with it. I think I paid around $4k for it, which was a great deal since it was in good shape even though it was old.
Six days after we bought it I got rear-ended by an octogenarian in a Cadillac. It bent the frame of the Jeep so the guy's insurance gave us $6300 which is exactly what we paid for this X5. This BMW had half the miles and was a way nicer car than the WJ. I think we lucked out. |

Since we sold my beloved i6 for the '04 4.8is, we have taken the 4.8is through a couple dozen National Parks, we've traversed both borders, dipped our toes in both oceans (and the Gulf, of course). We have driven as far North, South, East and West as possible in the CONUS. 185k miles. I still wanna drive to Denali NP in Alaska. My daughter is in the shadow of her 20th birthday this Summer. She still brings up the road trips. I'll trade that sh!t and whatever it costs against my old ass X5 and any beige Camry of any year, any day, anywhere, anytime. Screw reliability! :p: |
I was told I could have bought a newer Camry for what I paid for my X5.

Up next, either a fuel pump or valve cover gasket. I keep topping it off every 500+ miles. It doesn't burn oil. I see oil residue on the valve cover and intake areas. Will oil leaks ever stop?
Miles definitely going on. Next, a hitch for Austin tailgaters to hit "into". |

I have a large Weight-Distributing hitch mounted to the receiver hitch on the back of my '04 Chevy 2500HD, that I use mostly for camping, pulling my home-built 4'x8' squareback trailer. I leave it on there (secured with a locking device) year-round, since I hardly ever get tailgaters willing to come too close. I also had another WD hitch on my wife's '98 GMC, but she sold her 20' trailer, and didn't need the hitch anymore (and she kept hitting her shins on it, when loading or unloading her gardening supplies from the truck bed), so I removed it. I could put it on the X5, but it weighs a ton, but I might, if I ever tow with the X5 (already have a receiver, a regular ball & shank, and 4-way wiring, but no wiring for the 7-way and trailer brakes I'd need, to use with my 4x8 camping trailer). She seldom drives her truck, anyway. As we're both retired (me, now nearing 74, then at 65.5, after 50.5 years of work...and the wife, then at 51, after a fraction of my time, retiring just because I did!), we hardly ever need to brave the insane rush-hour traffic we? once did, but even in the afternoon traffic in our once-semi-rural area. The population of the six main communities we most frequently drive through...Mansfield, Rendon, Kennedale, Crowley, Burleson, & Arlington (south of I-30), is probably now approaching 300K, 2-3x what it was 31 years ago, when we moved here. And the number of cars, and cars with idiot drivers behind the wheel, has grown proportionately. Only some of us old-timers try to "drive friendly": Attachment 84172
So, X5chemist, I'd suggest putting on your X5, either

My Ram truck has this Austin traffic stopper. Works as a fourth light at night. Brake light and turn signal during the day. Once a hitch is installed, I'll get another. I'll use it as a bike carrier. Just over 200 thousand.
5 door handle's. two drive shafts. engine nothing replaced. dash out for blower motor. Ac fan. both steering linkages need doing.had them for a couple of years must do it soon. runs out of fuel on 1/4 tank. changed every bush and ball joint on the front. Trans slips in the winter if i start from cold but too scared to do a service on it.i leave it for 2 mins before driving and its fine. Done a spring conversion on the rear. It has never let me down and would not part with it. |
Fixing the siphon jet so you can use the bottom 1/4 of a tank is not difficult.
You say the transmission slips when cold it's possible it just seems like it. It will stay in first gear for much higher than normal when cold I think it does that on purpose to warm the transmission. When you preheat the motor I think the transmission will get preheating from the input side of the torque converter spinning. Or perhaps the transmission cooler tstat opens when the coolant temp gets hot enough than that warms vs. cools the trans fluid. I know with our e53s we would drive when cold but just drive quite slow for the first mile or two while the transmission was warning up. |

I'll never tire of the golden orange og bmw color. Wife's F10 goes white during the day but is more red than the OG color. I read they figured out the best wavelength to be most visible but not affect night vision.
In the Navy we would "rig for red" and flip all the instruments to red from white at night in case we had to surface we'd have useful night vision. That was more red than orange but the whole room was also lit red. |

I love the latter iterations of the motor but I wouldn't own one unless I had a lift and a spare car. I like and use the swing mpg gauge. I will watch it while climbing hills and bump cruise control down 1mph when the sweep drops to 20 and repeat unitil I crest the hill or hit 5-6 mph drop. On the way down the hill I'll speed up 1mph every time it gets higher than 30. Using that method I've been able to bump mpg on a 300 mile trip from about 21 to 23 (11% better). With my new X5 and n55 motor I've been able to bump a typical 24 up to 26-27 Also 11-12.5% gain. It's really not difficult and if there are enough lanes to not cause a traffic jam I'll do it pretty often. My best effort was 27mpg on a full tank! (Over 600 miles range!) I typically get about 550 highway so an extra 50 miles on a tank when the hills play in my favor and I don't have traffic behind me to slow down. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

low-mileage, barely-driven
Quote:
I had believed that I was driving mine less than everybody else, at 67.5 miles per month over nearly 40 months, but yours gets the prize for least driven (unless it's only a garage queen, which shouldn't count). Though I have other vehicles, the X5 is my choice to drive, whenever I do actually drive (my wife likes to drive in her Lexus, because she thinks the X5's seats are too hard, though I like them better than those in her '14 Lexus ES350...which I've only been allowed to drive once). However, I sometimes drive one or more of our three back-up vehicles, hauling stuff too long or large for the X5 ('09 HHR Panel, '98 GMC 1500, and '04 Chevy 2500HD), but the X5 is large enough for most shopping trips. Last week, I drove the X5 140+ miles, but also the GMC 80 miles...the most I'd driven in the past 8.75 years, since retirement, in one week. I'm sure that if I only drove the X5, it'd have a coupla more miles on it, by now. But, at 212704 miles, and in fine working condition (appearance-wise, not so much, having never been garaged by any of the three owners...I'm #3), I'm in no great hurry to add too many more miles on the X, anyway. |

Quote:
I've had the X for 1486 days and 2031 miles, equalling 1.367 miles per day. Oh, here's another thing about the mom-in-law transport trip. We left the ranch late, due to one of her great-grandsons failing to get there in time to go with us, and I was urged to drive fast (as a confirmed lead-foot and dragstrop 'champeen', I don't need much encouragement). The old lady and my wife were shouting different directions at me (I should've used Google Maps), so I had to make some quick manuevers at critical last-minute turns, and the old lady was not appreciative, I guess, and decided to use her other daughter for return transportation to the ranch. I'm not the designated driver of choice anymore...OK by me. Otherwise, despite not feeling well all day, I enjoyed driving the X5 again (still one of the best rides I've had), and even the wife liked the trip home, in 38F A/C, with her seat reclined. I've tried that in the passenger seat of her Lexus, and decided that I must see the road and can't snooze, like she can. |
