Transmission identification on E53, numbers in picture
Truck was built November 2001:
3.0 142294 miles I bought thus truck with 82K miles on it. I'd like to know what transmission it is and if there is any way of knowing if its the original. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...1-28122446.jpg The numbers are pretty visible if you have trouble reading zoom in your screen. Thanks for any and all input and help:thumbup: |
Yes, that looks like the original transmission.
If you look at the block in the top right-hand corner of the nameplate - The '2' indicates 2002 model year The 'G' means it's a GM 5L40-E transmission 'XE' is the code for the E53 3.0i transmission for a vehicle built between 10/01 & 10/02. ('TZ' for 08/99 to 10/01, 'XU' for 10/02 to 10/03 & 'YZ' for 10/03 to 09/06) Phil |
Phil,
Thanks a metric ton or £640,040.962621607 (or $a million Bucks) I'm printing your response and putting it with my manual. I hear people on this board saying this car could have had 1 of 2 transmissions: a "ZF" and something else. 1) is the above statement true? 2) how can you tell? |
It just occurred to me that your statement about the transmission most likely being original is interesting since most everyone here says that 100,000 miles and the trans is toast.
I changed fluid at 92,000 and again yesterday at 142,294 american miles, with Mobil 1. DexIV. I guess changing the fluid didn't hurt the transmission. I do a triple drain and fill. Thanks again for the info |
Specifically for E53 (rather than E70) –
I don’t think that the ZF ‘box (6HP26) was ever fitted to the 3.0 litre petrol (gas) models, only to the 3.0 litre diesels from 2003 onwards The early 4.4i & 4.6iS petrol (gas) models used the 5-speed ZF 5HP24 transmission and then the 6-speed ZF 6HP26 unit took over for the 4.8iS The GM 5L40-E unit certainly had a bad reputation with the 3.0 litre diesel engine but maybe it was a better partner with the petrol (gas) engine in terms of reliability?
