OBC issues
 

Hello,

I've had my X5 for about a month and have been searching the forums for some time now trying to figure out what my problem is.

I can't seem to reset anything in the OBC. I can scroll through everything, with the stalk BC button, and when i want to reset something like MPG, I scroll to it and then hold the button(BC) for a few seconds, but nothing happens.

This isn't the only problem, some buttons on the radio don't seem to work, so I can't set the time or change audio sources.

One note is that the factory cd changer seems to have been taken out, not sure if that is part of the problem in terms of it possibly being on the CAN buss.

Any help would be much appreciative.

If I understand your question correctly, you'd use the button on the righthand side of the dash cluster to reset that particular field.

If i hit the right button on the instrument cluster it says check control ok.
The left button just resets the odometer, anyone else experience this.

Which radio system do you have?

I have the buisness cd with dsp and bmw assist.

Anyone have any ideas?

I had to read the owner's manual while sitting in the car to figure it out. It's not intuitive, to me at least.

Yeah, i've read the owners manual. Things just are working as they should.

I am interested in this too. I can't seem to make it reset as well. I need to find the manual as well. Has to be somewhere in the car, I hope.

I still have the CD changer and all that. If I hold the right button by the cluster, I get into test modes. WTF??????????????????????? It does not reset the selected field.

Might be related to problems with your radio. Do you have nav and is your screen functioning?

I have Nav, screen is functioning, audio is working, amp is taking a dump though. Other than that everything seems to work. Just the right button by the cluster won't reset the damn MPG.

I don't think that's the correct way to reset it. I think you have to reset using the stalk or a button on the nav screen.

Nope, no Nav screen.

Looks like the OBC functions are tied to the radio/MID. If you have problems with the radio then that's probably it.

If you search some threads with people installing aftermarket radios, they all talk about losing OBC functionality. It still calculates but can't reset anymore.

I gotta go look at this again tonight. I have Nav, and didn't see the reset option. I got to the area where I can select what shows up on the OBC, but can't reset. Or is this supposed to be a button by the nav that I am supposed to press, as opposed to something in the nav options?

From those threads it looks like you can do it from the stalk and the nav screen. Like a screen option and then you can choose using one of the buttons to navigate and select.

I don't usually use those OBC functions and I don't have the OBC manual handy. Would be nice to have a PDF of the OBC manual.

How to program & reset OBC
 

I just played around with the OBC and this is what I found out. I have a 2004 4.8, Nav, & DSP for reference.

If I push in the BC button and hold it down, the cluster info. screen says PROG. Now in the nav/radio screen it will display OBC options you can program - consumption1, average speed, etc.

Use the rotating knob on the bottom right of the nav/radio screen to navigate. Push down on it to select and put a check in that option box. Then navigate to MEMORIZE to save your selections.

You can use the BC to remotely cycle through the options you selected and it will display in the cluster info. screen. HOWEVER, you can't reset an option/function using the BC button - only display those options you programmed to display.

You have to go to the nav/radio and select MENU, On-Board Computer. Then navigate to the function you want to reset (right button again), then push down to select it. Then a RECALCULATE prompt appears. Select this and it will reset that option.

I believe if you don't have the nav screen, then maybe you have to clear the functions in a similar fashion - through the radio/OBC buttons. I also assume that the OBC functions can be displayed on a mini-screen (same one that displays the radio information).

I think my radio is pooched, time to get a dynavin.

You are the man. Same setup on my car. 4.8, nav, dsp. I did not see the Recalculate prompt before. I also did not notice the nav switching over to the program function after holding the BC button. Really cool, definitively not intuitive.
