Mid display repair

First time post. I am the new owner of a 344k mile e53, just put a new engine in it.

So, I have the usual dead pixels on my MID or radio display, what ever you want to call it.

I am planning to fix this myself, have been searching the forums.
Found a walk though here
And a few repair cable or ribbon cables like this one: eBay

My question is that most of the replacement cables say to use a micro or t soldering iron.
But looking at the walkthough and posts, I cannot figure out where or why I would need it.
The cable looks like it is tape onto the one end and a friction fit with the foam piece on the lcd end...

Oh, I have a 2001 x5 3.0

Any other walkthoughs or tips?

Looks like the same author from your first link. This was in Xoutpost "How to's" (link at the top of the forum).

Sorry don't have an answer for your other question. Might want to try searching in this and/or the Electronics forums.

Well, that brings up another question.
What is the MID?
Is it the radio display or odometer and displays around it on the instrument cluster?

MID = Multi Information Display

There's a MID for the instrument cluster and one for the radio/OBC (OnBoard Computer).

Sorry but I linked you to the instrument cluster article not a radio/OBC like you need.

Apparently its the ribbon connector that is the problem.

sorry, but gotta ask . . . 344k MILES?
and was the engine truly junk or what-up?

me thinks you just jumped to the top, but for the engine replace.

Yeah, from what I can gather its the connection from the ribbon cable to the display that seems to fail. Almost like the trace on the ribbon wears off, maybe.

And the odometer just flipped over to 345k
when I got it there was no compression on 2 cylinders. The leakdown test showed leakage at the valves and into the crank case. Not sure what happened. But the neighbors ay work have the old engine with plans to tear it apart to salvage the crankshaft. So I will eventually know what failed...

if you get a chance, do a post in the 'how many miles' topic and maybe post some -good- pictures?

welcome!
