Just wanted to say a huge thank you for this write up. This has been bothering my wife for quite some time and with an hour of my time and some simple tools.....all fixed.

Also just did this fix, much happier car now and much more relaxed driver when parallel parking. Thanks @BULK.

"Good on ya mate" (in best Aus accent)

Thanks for bringing this to my attention as my e53 is doing the "spaz" out movement as well when put into reverse. Will be doing this week.

158 bucks for the replacement motor/backing plate assembly is better than 600 for a mirror assembly though.

Just curious what's the part number for the replacement motor/backing plate?

If I could I will kiss you OP.😙 lol not really but thanks for that now my mirror work like new

I have read through the whole thread and have one question: I GENTLY pry up and off the mirror using the "special pry tool". Looks like my plastic trim tool will work perfectly for that.

Is there anything I need to do PRIOR to that? First step is pry off the mirror? Nothing else comes off first?

Thanks!
