Need help with cv axel removal
Earlier this year I replaced the drivers side cv axel after finding a torn boot on outer cv joint. *I am now replacing the passenger side axel. *When I replaced the driver side, the removal of the axel was simple as I could pry out the axel using a short prybar sitting on a socket against the frame. *This time, the frame location and the extended output shaft is not making the removal as simple. *I have not found an easy way to tap out the axel from behind. *I have also rented a slide hammer to try and tap the axel out but the adapter that came with the slide is not fitting in the tight space.
Can anyone suggest another way to pull the axel or if anyone has access to TIS, are there suggestions listed there? |
I replaced both CV Boots 1.5 years ago and I still remember the passenger axle bar is longer than the driver side. To make it easier, I removed the carrier from spring strut by loosen 2 big bolts (upper and lower bolts). Look at the diagram below where i remove bolts number 3 (upper) and another lower where the carrier attached to spring strut.

I used a pry bar for an extension and hit the pry bar with a hammer.
Pointed end of the pry bar against the back side of the inner CV joint. Should pop out just as easy as the other side. |
Thanks for the info.
I found a couple of videos on you tube that reinforce the pry-bar tactic. I need to augment the tool collection and get another pry-bar today that is easier to hammer from under the car and try again tonight. Oh, and rotate the axle every few hits, don't just swing away at the same spot every time.

Woo-hoo, I got the old axel out. I ended up clamping a pair of vice-grip pliers onto the inner joint and pulled it with a slide hammer. Made it much simpler since I had already opened and disassembled the inner joint.
Now, I am trying to get a new axel to set in place and I am having trouble getting the C Clip to snap into place. Is there a trick to getting the clip to slide in easier? I am also tapping a pry-bar against one of the groves in the outside of the cv joint to knock it in place. Maybe I am not whacking it hard enough. I am afraid of damaging something in the transmission if I hit it too hard. |
First time replacing CV boot, i was struggling the same problem that you're having now. Using hammer & whacking or heavy duty pry bar then you may need a helper who's willing to hold the carrier/strut. I was only myself so i decided to remove the carrier away from the spring strut and it was much easier that way.

the c clip will snap in easiest if you place the opening facing down.
I use the entire axle like a slide hammer to give it a little momentum to get the inner to pop into place. Just make sure the splines are engaging properly... |
Do you need to replace the oil seal in the transfercase when you replace the whole axle? If so are there any instructions on doing it?
