Castrol Transynd?
Is anyone familiar with Transynd?
Manufactured by Castrol. Used mostly in Allison automatics. Any thoughts on using it in a ZF? From what I've read it's supposed to be liquid gold for automatics... |
May be liquid gold for transmissions designed to operate with it. What are you hoping to gain by running a non-BMW approved fluid?

I've been researching the ZF transmissions and run across several debates about oils, to drain or not to drain, are ZF1/ZF6 best?, Etc. Somewhere along the line I was reading about the pros/cons of Dex6. I know that GM pulled their endorsment of Dex6 and went back to Transynd only a while ago. Knowing Dex6 is a compatible oil with BMW it leads me to wonder about Transynd. Also, I know BMW endorses Castrol motor oil so I was wondering if anyone knew anything about their trans oil. |
When I looked into what ATF to use before servicing my trans last summer, I decided on the Castrol fluid that met the BMW requirement. Seeing that some on the forum have over 300k miles on original transmissions and viewing forum pics of high mileage trans disassemblies that show no significant wear, I could not come up with even one reason to switch.
BMW ONLY endorses Castrol oil specifically formulated for their motors, many retail locations that carry Castrol oil do even carry the BMW approved formulation (at least in FL and TX). |
I don't understand the comment that GM pulled their endorsement of Dexron VI, when it is their own specification.
What you may be seeing is that different manufacturers use a variety of transmission suppliers in different vehicles, and each transmission has specific fluid requirements, no matter who makes the vehicle. Dexron VI isn't a universally compatible fluid with BMW (except for power steering pumps) but it is used in some GM-built transmissions that BMW uses. |

I used Transynd in my former allison transmission equipped vehicles. I use BMW spec fluid in my one automatic equipped BMW.

Castrol TRANSMAX Z is in my X5, has been for the last 5k. Its approved for the gearbox (was the only one to be so when I checked), very happy so far. (approved by ZF who made the gearbox , I don't really care what BMW approve as they are not the manufacturer of the gearbox)
