liquimoly??

Can anyone tell me if this liquimoly is safe to use on my 04 X5 4.4i? I have bad VSS or VG and I can't fix it. I am looking for a temporary fix to stop or reduce the clouds of smoke my car lets off. Thanks in advance.

SlickGT1 12-29-2011 11:30 AM

It is German. Are you talking about the oil, or something else. I put in liquimoly in my X on last oil change. My mechs had it, and I figured why the hell not, give it a shot. Month with it so far, and seems to be fine. No noises or anything. Still, next change will be Mobil. It has just always worked for me before.

I'm from Bk too.

manfrmbklyn23 12-29-2011 12:06 PM

Cool I'm from midwood Brooklyn. I'm talking about Lubromoly lube guard*or
Liquimoly motor oil saver. Not positive of the actual name. I'm looking for the oil that will help my VVS/smoking problem. I heard it can harden and break the seals. I'm just nervous to cause further damage on this car.

z168 12-29-2011 12:08 PM

Theyre supposedly better than Mobil. I use 5W40

Whats the difference between Lubro Moly and Liqui Moly? I understand one is the North American market, isnt it?

manfrmbklyn23 12-29-2011 12:12 PM

I use 5W30. I'm not sure what the differences are. Just want to know if it's safe and will work to stop smoking or is it garbage.

SlickGT1 12-29-2011 12:31 PM

No it is not garbage, and a lot of people recommend it. Supposed to be the good stuff. Which shop do you go to?

manfrmbklyn23 12-30-2011 12:02 AM

I actually go to the dealer. Can you recommend a Indy shop in Brooklyn?

SlickGT1 12-30-2011 11:13 AM

Trio Auto Center.
3413 Fort Hamilton Parkway
Brooklyn, NY 11218-2152
718 - 622 -5522.

Talk to Oleg, or George, tell them Dennis with the black X5 recommended you.

I only go here if I can't do something myself. These guys are usually very busy, so I either go there very early in the morning, or call to make an appointment. I like them a lot because they only do what is necessary and do a very thorough job.

manfrmbklyn23 01-08-2012 01:47 PM

Thanks slick, did you say they carry the liquimoly?

manfrmbklyn23 06-15-2012 12:59 PM

Hey I finally went to trio for an oil change and they had no clue what I was talking about lol. I spoke to Oleg. I need a quick fix for this white smoke so I can trade this car in ASAP.

Really. Oh George might not be there. Hmm. Sorry dude. I know they had it. I even have the oil change sticker under my hood. I'll check tonight to make sure.

manfrmbklyn23 06-15-2012 01:12 PM

Hey I just called and asked for George and he said he knows about liquomoly and I can bring it by right now LOL. My bad. The mechanic and Oleg told me they didn't know about it LOL. I will bring it by in a few. Thanks.

SlickGT1 06-15-2012 01:18 PM

Yea they are strange guys. One buys the shit, one pours the shit, but neither knows what the other did. Either way, they are great to use as mechanics. I would talk to George about your smoke issue. He is a very knowledgeable guy. They have also rebuilt quite a few BMW engines.

See what they say.

Welcome to bavauto.com | Liqui Moly Race Tech GT1 oil - 10W-60 - 5 Liter bottle

Yes, see that link. The triangle in the corner of the bottle is the oil service sticker. That is whats under my hood. They have it for sure.

manfrmbklyn23 06-15-2012 01:35 PM

Yup I'm here and that's the bottle. If this stops my smoking, I'm trading it in tomorrow lol. Thanks again.

manfrmbklyn23 06-15-2012 02:49 PM

Hey one other question. For the smoke to go away, is it just an oil change with liquomoly oil that I'm looking for?? Or is there a liquomoly oil additive that helps reduce the smoking??

SlickGT1 06-15-2012 03:15 PM

No that should be it. Floor it a couple of times.

manfrmbklyn23 06-15-2012 03:24 PM

Ok thanks!

SlickGT1 06-15-2012 03:28 PM

Did you talk to George about your smoke issue.

manfrmbklyn23 06-15-2012 03:50 PM

ABSOLUTLEY! He said that it's not my crankcase (he checked himself) he basically said what the dealer and a Indy shop I went to said, "it's a tough problem and can get expensive to fix and it may or may not fix it just by doing the VSS's". He did say the smoke may or may not disappear I'll just have to see.

JCL 06-15-2012 04:18 PM

Oil additives don't repair engines that have a problem with oil consumption. They can mask the problem, possibly long enough for you to rip off some buyer that will then come on here and post about why does his new-to-him used X5 smoke so much. Makes you sound like a scam artist.

That all said, there are many Liqui-Moly products.

The oil-smoke-stopper products work by raising the viscosity. You could just put a heavier oil in the engine, same thing. Your engine requires a low viscosity when starting up (the 5 in the 5w-30) but if you want to put a heavier oil in and accept the accelerated wear upon startup, that is your choice.

Nothing wrong with Liqui-Moly oils, in general. But you need to know that the Liqui-Moly oils are available in many different blends. You need to read the specific technical specs for each one. There is one 5w-30 that is an API-SL oil, and that would be acceptable, but you can do better with an API-SM oil.

They also offer an API-SM oil, but the spec shows that it is a BMW LL-04 and you shouldn't use that unless you have a diesel, at least in North America. It is fine in Europe, but doesn't hold up when used with North American fuel blends, as documented by BMW technical bulletins. Since you have a gasoline engine, just stay away from any LL-04 oil.

People tend to pay a premium for Liqui-Moly products because they are "European" and that is deemed by some to be the source of all that is good. Problem is that without European fuels, those same oils are lower quality in practice than many of our domestic blends.

As an aside, don't use the 10w-60 referenced above, unless you have an M3 engine transplanted into your X5. It isn't better because it is spec'd for the M3, it is actually worse for your X5.

manfrmbklyn23 06-15-2012 05:33 PM

If masking the problem so I can trade it in makes me a scam artist, then so be it I am one. I still have payments on a car that I brought as a CPO that's given me nothing but heart ache and emptied my bank account. This is the nail in the coughin for me. I basically have a shot engine and can't get it to quit smoking, even after a liquomoly oil change today. Any how thanks for all the info that is a very informative post jcl.
