X5 display shows Ext. Temp 37 degrees

Lately on these cold mornings about 1-2 minutes after I start up, I will hear an audible "ding" "ding" "ding" and the display will show the external temp to be 37 degrees. This message disappears after 10 seconds or so. After going through the menus on my Nav screen and my manual I can't figure out how to shut this off. Anyone have any ideas?

Can't. Safety feature. In case the road starts to freeze. Either that, or it is reminding you to turn on the heater.

It's been a BMW feature for a long long time and is fully described in the owner's manual ;)

My first bimmer over 20 years ago had that feature and every BMW since then has had it. It warns you of frozen roads.

This is my first BMW so I was not aware of the feature. I must have overlooked it when I referred to the manual. It is somewhat annoying so I am surprised to find out that its a feature that can't be deactivated. Thanks for the input.

I'm almost certain you can deactivate it, although you may need to do so at the stealership. I think it says that in the manual? :dunno:

The best is when it's so cold that the pixels in the display take a minute or so to change just to display that message. Then, and only then, do you know it's really cold!

I agree. It would take a special level of road and conditions unawareness to not know that its cold enough to potentially form ice. I doubt that anyones first clue would be that dinging noise and temp alert.

I dont mean to be a pest about this. But i obviously consider myself someone smart enough to tell if there is ice or not on the ground. But it saved my ass over 20 years a few times. Lets just put it this way. At 40 degrees there is no ice. at 37 degrees there is ice. With out a temp gauge do you really think you would be able tell a 2 to 3 degree diference in temp standing outside. Now try to tell what temp it is driving at night on a dark road with out your temp gauge. And temp falls fast. You may have left your house on a trip at 3pm and it was 45 degrees out. By 5pm it may already be 30 degrees. That Makes a big difference in driving conditions and safety. No i dought you will be chacking you temp gauge eve 10 minutes so BMW decided to remind us. It may be annoying when it beeps. But before it actually beeped did you already know it was 37 degrees out and if not how long would you have drove before you knew if you ever did. Also i really dont think you can disable it but if you can why would you. Its only trying to save your ass and even if it only saves your ass once in your entire lifetime to me its worth listening to the beeb. By the way i think that is supposed to help you the most on long trips with frequent temp changes. Sorry about the long email. Have a good holiday

Please excuse me if I'm a bit ignorant, as I have only lived in Hawaii and LA, hence I haven't driven in ice yet, but if water freezes at 32 degrees, how is there ice on the road at 37 degrees if the temp is not cold enough to turn rain into snow? :dunno:

The 37 degrees is air temp. The ground could already be colder than that.
