strange heater problem

Here's a strange heater problem. I get cold air from vents when i have heater on to 90 degrees is my rpm is below 2000. When I accelerate and get rpm above 2000 for any period of time i get heat. Whats going on? my first thought was the water pump going bad? Thermostat seems to be ok. There is no overheating. I also replaced the climate control unit because the fan was acting funny.

Thanks for any advice.

I'm thinking water pump too as you get heat at higher revs. However, check coolant level is topped off and check/bleed any air from the heater hoses. The seats of the heater control valves can also clog up and restrict flow.

I have same problem with my 06 X5 3.0

Its not the pump on the engine. Its most likely the auxiliary water pump which is mounted under or near the climate control solenoids. ( upper drivers side area under hood). It uses an auxiliary pump because it wont flow enough at lower rpm.

Yes of course! main water pump is not required for the heater as you can still use the heater in "Rest" mode when the hot engine has been switched off and outside air temp is below 15C. Check out that Aux pump!

Sounds like you have a different problem. The engine should not be cold cruising down the freeway.
Is you check engine light on too?
How cold is it there?
