Clean, simple and inexpensive way to add AUX for those with NAV with tape deck
 

I have a 2002 X5 with NAV that does not have the option to add the OEM AUX to the head unit. I have been using a cassette adapter but was not happy with the aesthetics of the set up. I came up with cleaner looking solution and I thought I would share...

1. Remove the head unit. I used the following link to help me through the process of removing the head unit:

2. Once the head unit is completely out, remove the four small screws located on the faceplate.

3. Next remove an additional four small screws that secure the metal plate on the top portion of the head unit.

4. Detach the NAV screen from the swing arms. Once detached, slide the NAV screen downward and this will give you access to three screws located behind the screen (be careful as there is a ribbon cable that connects the screen to the head unit). Remove the three screws.

5. Open up the front faceplate. Find the two tabs at the top and open using a screwdriver.

6. Remove the top metal plate of the head unit and insert the cassette adapter with the cassette wire inside the head unit (this can be done in any order). Guide the wire from the cassette adapter to the back end of the head unit. Make sure to leave some slack in the line.

TIP: I recommend this particular cassette adapter for the best audio quality:

7. Go ahead and put the unit back together. Follow the preceeding steps in reverse order.

8. You can set up the jack end to be available in multiple locations (glove box, center console, dash, etc.). I set up the jack to come out in the ashtray. To achieve this, attach a zip-tie with string to the jack end. Using the zip-tie like needle, thread it through to where the ashtray is located (remove the ashtray basket beforehand). Then pull the zip-tie out the hole where the ashtray is located (it’s kind of like playing the board game Operation). Next, remove the clear lens on the ashtray basket and threaded the jack through the hole. Lastly, reconnect the head unit and button everything up. You’re done and enjoy! :cool:

Nice, I think I'll be doing this on my M5. The X5 has the 4x3 nav with tape so this won't work..... if I can only convince my wife the X5 needs a carputer...... :-)

I just use the Cruiser 2 or Freeway from Jabra. Much easier and no wires :-)

May be I can help you both. Can you take some pictures of the back of the unit and wire harness? I just bought a 05/2002 X5. I should try to install my homemade aux cable ($12) this week end. I need to unplug a wire and reconnect the plug according the instuction. I have installed about 10 aux-in cables before. Believe me, the sound quality are much much better with the direct aux-in.

I have an 01 with the 4:3 Tape Deck, I assume that this will not work on that particular unit?

there's a much simpler solution - there's an oem aux input cable that fixes itself onto the back of hte head unit, and produces a 3.5mm female port to connect your ipod. no messing around with teh tape deck, etc. required.

Unfortunately, this option is not available for X5's built before 10/2002 (or pay $585 for the upgrade). Otherwise, I would have definitely installed the OEM AUX (as stated in the beginning of the original post). I just wanted to share this option as it works well for me. It also only took me about 45 minutes from start to finish and cost $5.


I would think you could get it to work. Not sure since I have never worked with a 4:3 unit...

You have to upgrade to an MKIV nav computer. You can search the site for more info about the upgrade. It's not too complicated as you just swap out the the old CD drive with a new DVD drive located in the trunk. It's not cheap. You can purchase a used MKIV on eBay for $450 - $650.
