Waxes and Polishes

I wanted to see what you guys prefer for waxes and polishes for a black X5. I know there are a few posts on here but what you you guys use. Clay bar as well? Any help is greatly appreciated as I want to try to restore the paint of my 2004 x5 I recently purchased. Thanks in advance guys.

I recently clay-barred my 01 black metallic X using Meguiars Quik Clay kit. Then waxed him with their 'Yellow Wax'. The finish is superb from the clay bar, it was so easy too. And the wax just adds to the amzing finish.

The clay bar process took about 2 hours, the wax about an hour. No grief, no hand/arm or backache! Wish I'd found these products years ago!

Post #12 are the pics I put up on another thread..

Hope this helps

Thanks man. Did you use a machine to buff or all by hand? The pics look like just what I have been wanting for my x.

Order a random orbital kit from Phil at Detailersdomain.com. I got the one with Menzerna polishes, and wow, what a difference. No swirls :)

By hand, it was really easy. The wax comes with its own foam pad which is a doddle to use. Seriously, both really were the easiest products I've ever used. The pics are from my phone, and I'm no photographer-they really don't do the finished result justice.

Good luck whatever your choice

From what I've seen, clay bar is only for deposits in the paint. Do a thorough wash, and feel the paint. Theres a trick detailers use, being a plastic wrapper or baggie.

It will blow your mind. Rubbing it with your bare hand, the paint feels nice and smooth, rub it with the plastic, and you'll feel what seems like sandpaper.. Same finish, but the plastic amplifies whats there.

The detailers I know (my brother owns a detail shop) use a spray bottle of water or even glass cleaner while they clay bar the surface. Then, of course you need to high speed buff the paint. (an orbital is NOT high speed)

A black/dark vehicle can take 3-4 steps, easy. Being clay bar, then buff with a mild cutter, then polish, and then a sealer. Even then swirls can show up. Wax will only "fill in" the swirls. That's why they come back after a few washes.

That's why my X is silver...Lol
