introduction / performance exhaust question (4.4i owner)
2 Attachment(s)
Hello all. I purchased an 05 4.4i black/black w/ 90k on the clock a few months ago. I absolutely love it. I was driving an 06 xc90 but lost it in a flood. This thing has all the bells and whistles I wanted. I have had 30+ cars over the last 13 years covering many manufacturers and I really enjoy the fit and finish of this bmw.
What I would like out of this is a nice rumble from the exhaust. Nothing crazy, but a nice rumble when I start it up and give it some gas. I saw some magnaflow videos and it sounds awesome. The details where not there though. Can anybody point me in the direction for what size xpipe or muffler I would need ? Or throw me your ideas! thanks Matt PS sorry the pics are so big ha. Ill make them smaller next time i post pics |
Since you want rumble (as opposed to something engineered & tested for documented power =$$$$), then by far your most economical approach is to decide on level of sound and tone you're after and have a local shop fab exhaust using mufflers of your preference. They can replace rear section (thus allowing you to keep original parts if you ever want to put it back to stock). Or as much or little as you want. Personally I'd at least keep the original mufflers for future replacement when time to replace the car. Kits designed for the car are, for some reason, priced somewhere twixt crazy and "Dude, are you on glue?"
Original system IS stainless steel, as are a number of pre-designed aftermarket systems, so if that's a route you want to take, rock on and go for it. |
Thanks for the info. I think I will go with an x-pipe and stock mufflers. This is my everyday driver. I probably won't put to much into it trying to get more power. Just want it to have a little rumble when I start it up.

I tried the x-pipe, resonator delete and stock muffler but was not happy with the raspiness of the sound.
I ended up replacing the stock mufflers with supersprint and really liked the throaty rumbly exhaust... But not sounding like a merican muscle car... |
Professor, I tried PMing you back, but I don't know if it was sent? I bought my cats and X pipe from Summit Racing. Cat part#MPE-99334HM and the X pipe part#MPE-10790. I have a 6 month old daughter, so I know where you are coming from!(LOL)
Anyway, I like the sound of the exhaust this way because IMHO, it sounds better than stock, but it is not obnoxious and it doesn't drone on the highway. I think if I wanted it louder I would by aftermarket mufflers. Good luck. All the best, Dave |
Professor, i have X pipe and eisenmann race exhaust on my X, sounds great - deep throaty sound and not raspy at all. its my daily driver but with that great sound it attracks testers, and because it sounds so great you are tempted to hit the pedal ever so often just to hear the symphony.-- beautiful --

x-pipe placement is critical, search and read all here re power-loss, etc.
try a salvage set of 4.8 mufflers and tips, look nice, rumble you're looking for, if I read you correctly. can be had fairly priced. good luck. |
