I'm new!

Hello to everyone! I stumbled across this site about an hour and a half ago and I'm already addicted! What a great group of people!

I'm 25 and live near Baltimore. I bought my X5 in May, a 2001 4.4 sport, black with black interior, with about 30,000 miles--I've added 16,000 since then. Her name is Danica...you know, after Danica Patrick...sorry, I'm a girl...have to name my car! It fits her very well, I must say! I upgraded from a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited (I will never own another American product!)

I am so excited to find a website totally dedicated to the X5! I look forward to talking to everyone and getting helpful tips for those little things that go wrong along the way!

Pretty much the fact that I had to replace the brakes and rotors every 15,000 miles...and NO, it isn't the way I drive!!!

SuperGreg 12-24-2005 08:39 AM

:xoutpost: Michelle. You certainly "stumbled" in to the right place for all that is X. Remember, there are no dumb questions. Chances are that the group here knows much more about Danica than your dealer will ;) .

OHHHH YEAH.... the GCs are well known for that :) Things got so bad that Chrysler redesigned the caliper in an effort to try and stop the problem. Amazing that a 40k car had such poor brakes, eh?

The other big thing with those is that the climate control stops working after awhile...you might want heat but you'll get A/C :D

Welcome aboard!

moone 12-24-2005 11:29 AM

Hey M.

I like the comment you made :) , "I will never own another American car!!!" Interesting, I said the same thing at least 13 years ago. And haven't looked back since then. Had a 1989 Ford Tempo. After a couple years of driving the doors panels started comming loose, engine problems etc.

Since then, I'v owned Honda Accord and Passport , and guess what no problems with the door panels or engine and, I have not paid for any ;) major repairs to both vehicles.

Now I have a 2004 X5  and I feel like, (screaming) "I'm on top of the world!!!!!" (A scene from Titanic)
:dancing:

I'm so happy to have found this site and to know that I'm not alone in my obsession with the X5. Around where I live, there are tons of X5's (along with Cayennes, Range Rovers, etc), but most of them have carseats in the back with Mommy's behind the wheel that couldn't tell the difference between a 3.0 and a 4.8.

As soon as I get mine all cleaned up, I'll take some photos and get them posted!

Merry Christmas (or whatever your flavor may be)!

P.S.--Where do I get a set of angel eyes?? (You guys are rubbing off on me already!)

Check this post. The angel eyes in my signature are OEM and are in 2004+ X5s. I saw a young girl driving a black 4.8 in White plains area the other day, a first for me.

Avatar is the picture right by the name. I like Quicksilver's because I think it's a real neat picture of the Golden Gate Bridge from a unique perspective.

Welcome!....in advance...please excuse any pigish borish sophmoric behavior...I blame testosterone and marriage........."what? Coming Dear!!...Yes...I already took out the trash and already walked the dog!" grumble grumble...

quick list of things to watch on your 01...

Window regulators (all can and will go any where any time, they are proceeded by a poping sound and then the window drops)...

Axle dust cover boots (there are 8, four inner and four outer they tear and if not repaired lead to boku $$$ in repairs)...

Rear hatch latch (original OEm design is weak and they short once water creeps in) main symptom..rear hatch starts to pop on its own...

Cam sensors...(there are two of them the won't cause a check engine light, but will cause rought idle)...

in a four month span...I had every one of these things happen on an 01 with 50K...if you don't have a warranty...BUY ONE...use AAA or GE Financial....I sold my X after $4K in repairs and will be in a CPO next time. OTher wise...welcome...good luck and drive fast!

I've had to replace my rotors and brakes at 15k :D I think it's kinda cool since it's covered under warranty as well.

HAHA...My passenger's side front window regulator has been replaced, my drivers side front window pops and comes off track a lot...going to have that replaced soon, the telescoping steering wheel doesn't move forward and back, only moves up and down, my drivers side side mirror doesn't move left and right, just up and down, I've had the door lock actuators on two of the locks replaced, when it rains, the front passengers floor is SOAKED, my fuel gauge gets stuck saying I have a 1/4 tankful as I'm pulling away from the gas station...it resets itself after I travel about 60 miles, two of the pixel strips on the dash message board are burned out, I had major issues with one of the tail lights not wanting to work, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head! Oh yeah...did I mention I have no warranty? :(

The two things I miss about the Jeep...automatic door locks (when you hit 15 mph, the doors lock) and automatic headlights!

But all of those issues seem to disappear (in my mind at least) when I'm weaving in and out of traffic at 80mph+ and she's handling like a champ!

X5 Sport 12-25-2005 09:21 AM

Welcome Michelle

I guess you have come to the right place, with all of those problems, but the good thing about this site somebody else has had the same and knows how to sort it!! You should be able to get your door lock programed at the dealers mine lock after pulling away. The dealer programed this in for me last time my car was in there.

drex 12-25-2005 09:26 AM

wow-- you're up early on christmas!

several things:

1) steering telescoping motor needs replacement
2) your drain plug from the sunroof is blocked on that side. it runs down the passenger side. needs to be blown out and cleared.
3) you have a bad fuel tank level sender. needs replacement. it will eventually fail completely
4) pixels should cause unit to be replaced
5) that's a new one. (tail light). was the car ever in an accident?

the door looks do that automatically ilf the feature is enabled. dealer can do this.

:)

Kewl X5 12-25-2005 10:06 AM

Welcome aboard and I believe Drex answered all your questions.

Despite all those little problems, you'll definitely enjoy driving the X5 for years to come....it is light-years ahead of the Jeep.

Congrats and Happy Holidays!
