02 x5 4.6is Tranny

My down shift from 2 to 1 is really hard.
This happens after the engine is warm and running for a while.
I spoke to tuner motorsports and they said i need a software upgrade to attempt to resolve this.
I called my bmw dealer ship and made an appointment
Is this the correct path to fixing it or should i do something else

Do you mean that the 2-1 shift is harsh during coastdown to rest (rollout) or when you apply power? The harsh 2-1 rollout shift is obviously a very common feature on the 6HP26 transmission, but less so on your 5HP24.

There’s several people who have the same issue over on the Range Rover forums at the moment (which also use the M62 engine & the ZF 5HP24 transmission) and I’ve recently stripped a valve block down for one of the forum members to see if that might give a clue as to what’s causing it, but his valve block was absolutely fine.

I’m interested that BMW say there’s a software upgrade for the 5-speed as well as for the 6-speed. The Range Rovers use Bosch GS8.60.1 rather than your E53’s GS8.60.2 but, even so, I’d be very interested to know how you get on with this.

its going into the dealer tommorow so i will let you know.
The downshift issue is basically happening when coming close to a complete stop and the shift happens from 2-1
Turner motor sports says that the upgrade on the computer has 85% chance it will fix the issue
Your pics look great and i will give you an update on the fix

I have exactly the same problem so would be interested in your update. Cheers.

My concern was that what they were calling a 'software update' would actually only amount to them resetting the long-term adaptions. Hopefully that won't be the case.

put the tran in sport mode and the prob goes away. all they need to do is raise the rpm at which the shift from 2-1 happens. its a pain in the butt. interested to hear if the software update helps...i just put it in sport mode when i drive in stop n go.

same problem with my x5 4.6is 2002, going in tomorrow. taking to indy to have idle rpm raised from 550 to 650-700 rpm while in drive with a/c off. the problem goes away while a/c on or in sport mode. a/c on rpm is around 720 rpm. will update

For $300 put the Dinan tranny software on. It totally eliminates the 2-1 shift issue. I had the latest software from BMW on my 2003 4.6is prior and it still had the problem. Now that I have the Dinan version it's perfectly smooth. Also, sport mode is a beast!

I'm not a big Dinan guy, think most of their stuff is overpriced for what you get. But this is very much worth it. Probably will save my tranny and TC, at least for a while.
