More apt performance comparison would be against a garden variety 35i X3. Whoops, scratch that. Maybe a lowly Camry. Nope, Camry blasts through the quarter over a second quicker and smokes 4.8is to 60. Nevermind. Time doesn't treat cars or humans well I suppose. Still like the 4.8is as a great towing platform and all around fantastic SUV, but it is no M.

I agree....there's no real comparison of the vehicles. The M is newer and much more powerful in every aspect of horsepower and speed dynamics. Although, the 4.8is is/ was considered the M version for those particular production years. I love my 2004 4.8is and that it's the "Big Daddy" of most X5's next to the newer M's. My wife (newly weds) has been driving my 2003 3.0 and when she drives my 4.8, she'll text and tell me "your truck is the shiznit!". LOL! That V8 makes a huge difference for me!
