Can someone explain the climate control?
 
I have a 2005 x5 4.4. I do not understand the reason for putting the temp 'roller' control on the dash and then also the buttons that change the display temp. Are the buttons just for the AUTO control? Why not just one temp control?

I believe the vent with the roller temperature control is independant of the other vents whose temps are controlled by the climate control buttons.

I don't know the "official" explanation from the manual but its a nice feature (the roller on the vent).

You set the climate control but sometimes its a little too hot or too cool after a while. So, IIRC, the roller only affects certain areas. You can the adjust the roller for cooler/hotter air to what's more comfortable easier (easier than trying to find a compromise with the temp control).

Think of it like fine tuning the climate control. Like different climate zones.

I use the roller control to adjust the airflow to my face.

It seems to come in handy in the winter when the cabin is pretty toasty or even stuffy, you can direct a nice cool breeze to your face to help cool off without letting the cabin get too cold.

From my experience......

The roller doesn't actually change the temperature but what it does is only select the ratio of air that you like.

Climate control works by cooling air to minimum temperature and then introducing a little or a lot of trim hot air to bring it up to the temperature that you require.

The roller basically does the same so you'll find if you have the interior temperature selector set to 18 degrees and have the roller set to full hot the airflow from the middle vent will be just above zero however if you then set it to full cold you'll find it will blast out of that vent and vice versa.

The idea of it is to set a temperature that is comfortable for your face and regardless of what your climate control is doing the temperature on your face will always be pleasant.

The roller is a blend control. It allows outside air in to help keep windows from fogging by with letting you fine tune the temp/humidity in the cabin.

While you guys are at it, can someone please tell me how to let fresh air in through the vents without the need of turning the climate control on or having to wind my window down?

The roller wheel isn't an absolute temperature control, it is an offset control from the cabin setting, and only applies to the centre vents. Each dot is one degree! For slightly cooler or warmer air on your face, depending on your preference. Leave it on neutral if you like. Just don't set the cabin on max cool and the centre vent on max warm (or vice versa) since the system will fight itself

Turn off recirc. The AC isn't designed to be turned off. Just use it, IMO

Shut the a/c compressor off and turn off recirc. I wouldnt recommend it though, as mold can build up in the evap.

I run the HVAC on 'manual' about 99% of the time: I set the temp(s) and vent position(s) to what I want and leave it/adjust it, as I choose.

When I want A/C or defrost, I hit the button(s). Lots of fresh/outside air pouring through via the manual setting.

For the 'A/C and Auto On 24/7' contingent, I do not subscribe...our 2001 oe freon and A/C works fine and, no mold.

I don't like that roller idea; it's the 1st thing I thought was ironic in one of the most technically advanced vehicles in the world.

My other cars have true Auto-Climate- set the temp, it's comfortable, and you're done.

The newer BMWs got rid of the roller control, didn't they?

No, they computerized it. My iDrive let me change the fan speed and temperature offset of the centre dash vents independently of the automatic temperature preset. Far too much control, I would much rather have had the thumbwheel back.

This is funny because I took my 05 in for mechanic work and they gave me an 08. I was excited because the temperature adjustment is dials instead of buttons AND I thought they had removed that damn roller on the dash. However, It took my 15 mins to figure out how to warm the air. you have to go into the climate menu on the computer to change the temp which was the roller function. This is some major over engineering. Just give me a knob to control the temp and we are done!

You're missing the whole point. The dial is only for the face vents. If its zero outside (okay 32 for your Fahrenheiters) and you want it 23 (74) in the car its going to blow hot air out of the vents so to prevent you getting a hot blast into your face they give you a dial so that you can adjust how hot the air is coming out of the vent. It doesn't blow cold air out if its set to cold so that they are working against each other it just restricts the amount of hot air so that the car doesn't warm up through your face.

It's brilliant engineering

No, it is beyond explanation. Why would you need two separate controls for the temperature? Well 3 or 4 if you count the passenger and rear...

Its stupid. I set it hot 2-3 red dots all winter and cold 2-3 blue dots all summer. Spring and fall are annoying...
