E53 X5 4WD. Mod able?

Hi

Was just wondering if the E53 X5 4WD computer can be modify so it will allow me to dial in the amount of torque to front and back the way i wanted it?

Say i can dial in 30% front and 70% back or even 10% front and 90% back, is this feasible? I used to be able to do this with the Nissan Attessa on my Semi track R32gtr pending on weather condition.

Also can i modify the Transmission Cooler to AIR COOL and slightly larger?

Thanks

Assuming you have an x-drive model, torque split is automatic, so no, you can't set it. It depends on traction.

If you have an earlier model, it is fixed.

Why would you want to change the transmission cooler? One member did so, but you may lose the heating function when it is cold, increasing wear.

I don't have an X-drive, its an 02 x5.

I'd save a whole heaps of fuel if its only RWD and only engage 4WD when i want or how i'd like to set my torque split.

I can use an oil cooler thermal stat for warming up purpose, the last thing anyone would want on an old X5 is to have many potential places for coolant to escape.

If it is an '02, then the torque split is mechanical and fixed. No joy.

To save fuel, I would think you would have to disconnect all the moving parts and/or reduce the weight. The front wheels are still going to spin the front axles, the differential, and the driveshaft, even if you could create a part-time transfer case.

I'm pretty sure that there is a way to make it RW only but one would sacrifice abs and traction control.

There is with yours, you have x-drive so you can disconnect the actuator on the transfer case.

For the OP, best way would be to take out the transfer case and all associated hardware, and just have RWD. Actually, the best way would be to sell the X5 and buy an E39 touring.

Timatka,

Sounds like a recipe for grabbing defeat out of the hands of victory. :dunno::confused::dunno::confused:
