WTF, Now hatch lock, and soft close failed

Yea so I go to open my trunk in garage to load car.

Pressed the release bar, heard a funny noise, hatch stayed closed. Pressed it again, hear two ticks, and still closed.

Popped it open via emergency release. Bottom hatch works, top just does the two ticks.

Quickly pulled off the interior trim on top, wires look good, everything connected.

Checked all fuses in trunk, and glove. All good.

Took out the wiper arm, took out wiper motor. Took out latch mechanism.

Latch mechanism in hand, connected to harness, push button, the motor on the units makes two clicks, but won't spin, no matter if latch is locked or not.

Shit.

T50 torx into that plastic gear, pushed it in, spun it, it will unlock the latch. I guess this is the other way you can open the hatch. Now, after doing this, I push the button, the motor spins very fast but seems to smack something internally, and has no effect on the latch. I mean if latch is closed it won't open it, or vice versa.

Can anyone suggest something, or am I in for a new unit?

Damn. Yea it won't pull the hatch in either.

Well I guess ECS is about to get more of my money. Ecs if you read this, at least send stickers.

So this was a fail. I got the part, without actually putting it in, connected it to the harness, pressed the button and same shit. Two clicks, and it still doesn't work.

Any one else have a suggestion. Can it be the switch itself?

SlickGT1 03-20-2012 10:25 AM

Ok updating this, because I am now lost, and getting my electrician friend to come and diagnose this. I myself am lost like you can't imagine.

So I got the new switch and motor, plugged both in, and guess what, same shit. Nothing changed, lock won't unlock, and lock won't soft close. What the hell is going on?

All I get is two clicks when I push the button. The damn thing won't even try to close itself.

Any advice at this point will be appreciated. Fuses are fine as well by the way. I am so confused why this is not working, that it's not even funny.

Ok, I figured I would update. My electrician friend came by today. Right off the bad, he said the relays that our cars have are garbage and need to be replaced to either a Seimans or Hella brand. Then it turned out that one of the relays, the "supposed K70" according to his diagrams, not the Bentley manual, which is the one closest to the tail light, was sticking and causing the issues. He had a Seimans relay that he plugged in and right away, everything went back to normal. So problem solved, and I guess I have to return all the stuff that I purchased for no reason.

Now, that same relay, also controls the air suspension. Which leads me to believe that quite a few people seeing problems with their air, should also replace. I am going to see if ECSTuning has all of the relays, and replace all of them. The ones we have in there are just shitty, and according to him, he always sees them fail, always.

It was odd that it was the first thing he said when he saw my car, and fixed the issues in literally 2 minutes. So thumbs up for another free fix.

P.S. He tested the relay as soon as he removed it, and it functioned fine. As a matter of fact, he plugged it back in just for shits, and everything worked. He still threw that shit out because according to him, it is just not worth the risk. He also said that these relays are in the American BMWs. Not the ones made in Germany.

Glad you got it fixed.

Yea so am I. I would never be able to figure this out on my own. Whatever electrical skills I have, like testing ground, and power, led me to nothing.

The dude took one look, and figured out the problem right away. I'm just pissed I didn't call him earlier.

Did not see the relay being the fix, I'm glad you got it all worked out.

Do you remember the color of the original relay? I'll have my guys see if they can find them for anyone else that needs them.
