Every time I start the car and drive 5 feet, I get ABS, BRAKE, and traction light come on, followed by "DSC/ 4x4 Inac." on the DIS, then followed by "SelfLevel Susp. Inac." I know the second DIS message is very common on X5's, but does it usually proceed all the other messages? The car isn't in limp mode (can drive up to 65mph) but the car feels funny. Really don't want to go to stealership, but may have to.....

BTW, front struts were replaced 2-3yrs ago with Arnott ones. Never received a message when those went out and I had GT1 calibration/reset after replacement. Also, disconnected battery and checked fuses, all fine and problem still there. What do you guys think it is? Air module behind glovebox?

Thanks

This sounds like the issue I had on my vehicle.
I was first told it was the alternator... Replaced it... no

The whole time I kept asking to replace the DSC/ABS control module. On the 2001 x5 it is located behind the front left head lamp.

This removed the ABS/Trac/ Brake lights.

This worked for my vehicle, I am only suggesting it as an option not the solution. Good Luck.

Dealers have their role to play so ...

Hopefully, they'll just charge you a flat rate for diagnosis. Let us know what they find or don't find.

Here's to hoping its something not too expensive!

Could you give me more details on what you mean by running test 9 of the DIS? Did you actually drive around with the GT1 connected or do you mean you used the diagnostic mode that displays through the instrument cluster?

My wife complains that sometimes, and only at slow speed, that it feels like the brakes are engaging and that she feels it through the accelerator pedal too. I've ben trying to replicate this problem but have had no luck so far.

Did you actually get the ABS light? She said no lights or warnings come on when it happens.

When I get my GT1 back I'll scan for codes/faults. Looks like a voltage regulator is a little over $100 through ECS for our 4.8. Wonder if I can replace it without removing the alternator.

I meant on the dash. Followed these http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/x5/...us-bmw-x5.html and would drive 30mins thru NYC (summer time), hit traffic in the lincoln tunnel then the abs(or dsc?) light would turn on and my brakes would grab the wheels as if the X thought she was on ice.

Kept happening as I would try to accelerate and I could see the display on my dash show from 16v to 18v and would fight the X to pick up speed (proabably at 30mph and up) it would not happen and I would pull over, stop the engine, and wait a while before I tried moving again.

Sometimes the trifecta will display and sometimes I would get into fail safe mode as well untill I stop, wait, and restart as well as turn my wheel all the way left and right....what ever it took to get home. And ONLY at traffic after driving for a while.

Bought BMW X5 545 645 745 Alpina Valeo Alternator Voltage Regulator 4.4L OE @ $69.45 from American Engines Co. Product List

You will have to remove the alternator and unscrew the old v.regulator and pop this one in. Still driving great.

Thanks and appreciate the follow-up. Looks like what you described is not the same. X doesn't have any warning lights.

However, I did do the OBC diagnostic test and voltage usually is at 13.9. Hard part is:
1. Trying to reproduce the problem
2. Monitoring the voltage
3. Avoid getting into an accident while driving trying to accomplish #1 & #2 above.

Sorry for the hijack lemans.

Sorry to crash in on the thread but I seem to have the same problem. Just did a 5000 km road trip up the coast and back. Stayed a couple of mornings in Blue Mountains.

Each morning was 10 degrees C and each cold start car electronics went haywire....DCS, 4x4, tire pressure mon, abs, trans fail safe, engine fail safe, park brake on warnings galore, monitor on and off. Warnings would gradually clear once temp went up and car had been running a while.

Checked on-board voltage was 12v and once moving hovered between 14 -14.3. Battery was checked by mechanic prior to leaving. My bet is the battery is bad given I only had these probs in the cold and it is an old battery now.

Got a call from the dealer today.... Apparently, two modules/sensors on the transfer case went out and they also want to replace air suspension module. The transfer case sensors will cost $1500 and $500 for air suspension module.

julezw 03-09-2012 09:29 PM

Sorry to hear that lemans,

I'm starting to fear something much worse than the battery. I have read a lot of threads regarding the tri-fecta of lights being caused by faulty T-Cases. Most seemed to replace the actuator motor.
