ewwww. oil
so I open my oil cap, and I find this creme looking puss on it. the schucks dood said it is prolly condensation mixed with oil and that I should be find.
however its schucks...and I'm not comforted by it. what do your guys think? |
Get your oil changed. It prob. is condensate, maybe from short trip/no warm up situ, Or a long interval since an oil change, OR possibly a clogged crank vent tube. Oil & filter change is first step, imo.

Do as MotorDavid says first and pray that problem solved!
Also check your Dipstick for the same residues! If your oil here is also cream colour your symptons are classic of Head Gasket gone!Your oil is mixing with your water! |
POWERS1 is right on.

I agree with powers1
I had a similar problem on my other car (not the X). The head was cracked  (Caused by overheating, aluminum heads are very sensitive to heat) Let's hope it's not the case here. Could just be consendation. Saxi |
If your daily trip is short distance. That will cause it. Don't worry about it. As MotorD said. Every so often, drive some long trip will burn off excess moisture. Do a search in X5World, someone mention it before here some where. It happened to my ML320 & X5. At one time I was only 2 miles from work. Daily driven short trip will cause this creamy stuff. As far as head gasket goes, it will give similar indication. And you should be able to see some oil in your radiator. Unless you really abuse the engine, German engine are pretty tough. Hope this help. GL

I've seen this twice before on 3.0 petrol cars, (once on an x5 vband once on a 330i touring). Both times it was just condenstation so fingers crossed. To be double sure you should get the hydrocarbon test done. It's basically a bottle of fluid that attaches to the header tank when the car is running. If there is any exhaust gas in the water (indicating a head or head gasket failure) then it changes colour. Best of luck, fingers crossed for you!

If you want to be 100% sure what the problem is, send an oil sample to a lab like Blackstone. I believe its ~$20 for a test. They'll give you a detailed report with explanations. You can find out exactly how much water is in there, and other stuff.
