car wobbles after 60 mph

Anyone had this before? I'm assuming i need a wheel alignment. Scared it might be my tie rod or control arms.

I have exactly the same thing. Subscribing to see what happens

A couple things to check for starters:

1. Wheel balance. Do a dynamic balance on the tires. Easiest thing to check. Out of balance tires will cause a steering wheel shimmy at high speeds (over 45 mph or so). While they rebalance the tire, have them check the rims to make sure they aren't bent (which will also cause this vibration). If you bought tires from a tire shop, they often will rebalance for free. I would try this first.

2. Front control arm bushings (about $35 per side for the part plus maybe 1hr of labor). These are the large bushings. Also know as the front tension arm bushings. Supposedly common wear item and can cause intermittent vibration on pretty much any BMW.

3. Bad ball joints or tie rods. Have mechanic check this out.

4. Driveline misalignment can also cause vibration. Have a mechanic check this out.

uneven rotors could also be a culprit

X5Boise pretty much nailed everything on the head. Start with the wheels, then inspect the suspension. I'd lean towards the CABS if you're wheels are in balance, they are a common failure point on the X, when they start to go vibrations being to creep their head. HERE is a link to my suspension components for the E53 X5.

HEY,

I had a vibration issue also and replaced all front suspension twice and it did not cure anything....then my TQC went out and after replacing it iave had zero vibrations. so bottom line it might not be your suspension the TQC on these especially the 3.0 go out by the looks at about 130-160K and right around 100K i started to have this issue and at 150K it went out. ive even had 2 sets of tires put on and rims and no difference vibration was there after 60 no matter how many alignments/ balances i did. even with the fancy balance machines etc. in my case it was the TQC and our member here by the name of Phil had that idea that it could be a source of vibration and i can say in my case it was.

Mine doesn't shudder until abut 200 kmh, but then I wasn't looking at the speedo............:wow:

TQC - what the heck is this?
Torque Convertor?

The reference to "Phil" confirms it is probably the torque converter...;)
