some sort of fan stays on, but don't know which one
 

A fan behind my grill stays on after I turn the car off. I can feel the air when I put my hand in front of the grill. The sound caught my attention one night after I turned off my car. There seems to be many fan problems, with them staying on after the car is turned off and many fixes, but I have no idea which fan it is in my situation.

2005, 3.0i auto with 135k kms

for the posting problem, go to your user cp, then under settings and options, go to edit options, then right at the bottom under Miscellaneous Options, change the Message Editor Interface to 'Standard Editor'. that fixed all my posting issues.

Now I am going to assume that is normal because mine does that from time to time. Some of the other whips I owned did the same thing. My first encounter was my Caddy CTS, after a drive, I shut the car off, fan would kick on. Went to the dealer they said it was normal operation. The fan kicks on to further cool the motor. SO I am assuming it is using the same principal.

Fwiw, the aux cooling fan on our '01 often comes on during stop & go, or while making the ~4 mile climb up our mountain road; it then stays on for 'awhile', even after car is turned off. That may be the fan you are hearing.

If the fan were to stay on to cool the engine, how come it turns off after I turn on/off the car right away? I guess the next time this happens I will leave it and see how long the fan actually runs for :dunno:

Aux fans usually only come on for supplemental cooling, like when you're in stop & go traffic. Most modern cars usually depend on the vehicle moving thus getting air pushed through the radiator for main cooling.

Its not designed to stay on all the time.

time to get a performance radiator...lol..maybe that'll help.

The fan is thermostatically controlled. If the engine is hot, when you shut it off the cooling flow stops, and the airflow stops. The car goes into a heat soak, and the coolant temperature rises. The fan staying on is by design. When you turn it off and then back on, you interrupt the cool down cycle. The highest temperature your car will usually see is right after you turn it off hot, so having the fan run is a good thing.

If you had the a/c on, that fan will be running most of the time your engine is
