sounds like a head gasket

Yep. Get your X5 towed to BimmerHaus in Broomfield and have Jim Leithauser diagnose it for sure (and repair it).

Do. Not. Drive. It.

^I'm with admranger and hippee, sounds like a head gasket. If you're not going to tackle it yourself, I'd highly suggest having it towed to your local BMW shop.

Head Gasket...they might have tighten it too much or the gasket wasn't lined properly with the seams and did a rush job finishing it....i'd get it fix to local bmw shop ( admranger) said..have the receipt and if you can address it to whoever did the job and hope to get your money back and pay for some of the job now..goodluck mate

I'd like to know how you think they could have done the valve cover gasket wrong enough to blow the head gasket?
The valve cover is thin aluminum and the head is 4" thick cast and machined aluminum...

The only possibility other than a head gasket is that a couple of hoses got switched when reassembling, but not a single coolant hose, that I can think of, needs to be touched to do the valve covers.
And that coolant line would need to be switched with a oil or breather line. I can't think of one...
