Wheel Speed Sensor problem?
Hey guys,
Yes, its me again, still trying to solve my transmission issues. (If you didnt know, my tranny is rebuilt and tested (twice) and still having issues when the car comes to a stop and when I step on the gas, no movement and TRANS FAIL SAFE eventually with a kick.) After almost everything changed, my mechanic is thinking there is something wrong with the ABS module. I got it rebuilt which did not solve the tranny issues. I finally bought my INPA software/cable and started to test the speed sensors, since I had read some time ago, my system may get a wrong speed signal which would mess up the tranny calculations. I can drive the car manually without any problems which led me to the same conclusion. Well, INPA shows wheel speed for each as 16 (rpm) when the car is not moving, which quickly made me think, that must be the problem. When I deactivate one of the front speed sensors, numbers goto 0 on the screen, which is what its supposed to be IMO. What do you guys think, any experiences, thoughts? Cheers, Ozzie.. |
Also, my car is 2001 X5 4.4. There are no speed sensor errors in ABS module, but 49 and 59 stall speed and gear errors in transmission module.

More info : Yesterday I got this error :
52 Gear Check 2 Throttle-Angle : 27.06% Mean Value - Rear Wheels : 144.00 rpm Output Speed : 448.00 rpm Once again, the transmission was rebuilt and checked, and I am suspecting ABS module or speed sensors. Anybody? Ozzie.. |
There is no one coming up with suggestions. I say change one speed sensor, and check with INPA. See if that fixes anything or even if that rpm goes to zero.

Update : Replaced all the speed sensors and got the same error..

Damn that sucks. Hope someone here has any suggetstions. Can you take to dealer to diagnose?

i am fighting with a similar problem on my 2004 E53. whislt i have a heap of fault codes, I'm hoping most are stemming from LHF wheel sensor which is not visibly damaged and measures the same resistance as the right front one. I did find code 5EAC which is DSC sensor rotation rate. I found the bearing is a bit notchy so I'll change that and see if it makes a difference

Try to check the worm gear on the speed sensor.

There is some sort of a 'voltage interruption' error on the transmission module (I dont remember exactly since my mechanic did the check with autologix?) which makes me think that the problem is certainly electrical.
The battery is new and the alternator checks ok. What do you guys think would be the culprit? (I have replaced my transmission module briefly with another used one which didnt fix the issue).. Meanwhile I am also experiencing delayed engagement (from P to D especially, not very frequently though) which I blamed the valve body first, but that also was replaced with a rebuilt one and when I test the solenoids they seems to engage fine.. I have been reading rear subframe bushings may cause some of the transmission issues (some sort of disengagement of tranny when hitting a bump?), I know mine are very old and need replacement. I will take care of it when I have the funds.. Hey, I still like my X5, drives the best (when no problems, of course).. Cheers, Ozzie.. |
what gear??
the speed sensors are built into the bearing & hub. in the back of the wheel bearings are a row of metal lugs that the sensors detects as the wheel turns. that info is used to determine both road speed and wheel slip, and its that info that "drives" everthing via the various computers |
Not come across this before but a high resistance ground connection somewhere in the system can throw up weird and wonderful issues like this. It throws out the reference voltages inside the module and can give some incorrect sensor readings and can cause errors on the canbus. I've had some fun issues on peugeots and renaults, french wiring isn't the best in the world.

I don't know either you'll need a good wiring diagram and patience. I was just adding my experience from problems on other vehicles, as it sounds like you have exhausted most of the other possibilities. study the diagrams and make a checklist of voltages and resistances to test and go through them methodically highlighting any discrepancies. to look for bad joints and connections I prefer doing a volt drop test with the item under load. to check for a bad ground set your meter to voltage, put the negative lead of your meter to battery negative possibly extend it a bit and backprobe the ground pins at the module and sensors with the meter set to dc volts and the engine running, the voltage should be less that 0.01 volts or there is resistance in the ground which can give a floating reference.

I have checked the main ground wire close to the module box (passenger side) and it looks perfectly healthy. So there goes another reason for these issues..

Update : I still have the issues, and here are more errors I can see with my Bmw Scanner :
EGS -> 3B/81 - Stalling speed ABS -> 21/FD - Wheel speed sensor front left, open circuit LEW -> 09/AB - No CAN message (ASC) IKE -> BD/D0 - Electronic braking-force distribution 8D/90 - EGS signal line disturbed LCM -> 28/01 - Thermal oil-level sensor defect Shadow-memory: 59/01 - Transmission failsafe program Ideas? Ozzie.. p.s. I have tested and replaced the speed sensor and no change.. |
Looks like the wiring for the front left wheel sensor may be broken, that is why you have an open circuit, and why replacing the wheel sensor didn't fix the problem. Did you check the pins in the connector to the wheel sensor to see if they might have been damaged? If you replaced the plastic housing for the connector did you get the wiring back in the right order?

Im having almost the same problem, I bought a 2001 x5 4.4 with tranny problems.
The car will take properly the gears only in manual mode, it will slip or will rev but wont go in first gears. I change the oil and tranny filter, then the speed sensor and the wiring harness temp sensor. After changing the parts we rescan the ecu but did not got any more errors. THe one we had was the 59 stalling speed plausibility error present. Appreciate any info before going into changing the tranny. |
