The idea itself works, but mine could not complete a full cycle due to some obstruction preventing fully-opening.
Mine started the cycle correctly, but stopped on half-open.

I don't have the non-panoroof. Is there a manual override (like a place to stick a screwdriver or socket) to open/close the glass? If you can't cycle it totally open/close, then yes there's an obstruction or something broken.

I'm sorry I can't offer more. Maybe search to see common failure points with non-panos here and see what people did to just keep it closed and non-functioning. That's what panoroof owners sometimes do as its cost prohibitive to repair/replace.
