6-1/2" subwoofer blown - help

Hi Folks,

Looking for advice, I blew one of bmw's sub-woofer in the rear compartment, I believe they are 6-1/2" any one had to replace them before and what do you suggest for replacement. I searched online I've not had any luck finding matching ones. I pulled the subwoofer out, it has 4 type of connection, I'm not sure what to look for replacement online.

Thanks for any suggestions

the BSW replacements got good reviews - the ad is at the top of every page here for a possible discount, though I think that discount is reserved for a complete replacement (just hit refresh until the BSW ad comes up).

On the specifics page, they have a great how-to pdf for removal and description of components. (how to remove the speakers from the surrounds and what glue points to re-mount the replacements and re-connect)

Thanks Phr3d, I'm just looking for simple replacement of the just one of the busted subwoofers in the back panel. I don't know much about subwoofers, and the info on the sub isn't useful.

NOT the subwoofer, look for the complete speaker replacement system. Then, look at the install instructions.

admittedly, it would be $160 for Two 6.5's midbass, but I'd guess that it would sound weird to have only one replaced.

cheapest route would be bone-yard, though it is Not easy to salvage 'em with the glue and surrounds, and diff to know if they are good unless you bring a test kit, but it is unusual for a midbass to get 'blown'.

Did you test by swapping the opposite midbass over to confirm that the 'broken' one is the real problem or is the 'broken' one damaged/obviously junk.

Most BMW subs are dual voicecoil drivers, hence the 4 contacts on the connector. Aftermarket replacements can therefore be a little tricky. Moreover, the OEM subs tend to be high efficiency, (relatively) low power units and aftermarket speakers frequently don't match the audio characteristics of the OEM system, which is usually equalized and crossed over in the amp.

Are those BSW tweeters and speakers really worth the upgrade. I am actually looking at replacing my tweeters, and the fronts seem to pop at random times.

If you're looking to replace the OE one, they're all over ebay:

Thanks for this information, I'm just looking to replace the subwoofer not the hole unit, rest of the parts work just fine...only popped bottom sub.

Cheers,
