want to make headlights clear

Hi all,
Im new to this forum.....I have 2001 silver x5 with xeonon headlights and I am looking to somehow make them clear without the amber turn signal, and also i want to install angel eyes...I was wondering what my options are, I am trying to do this for the least amount of money but still want it to look good!!I mean should i sell my lights on ebay and buy euro clear ones..if so how much do you think i could get for mine and how much will the euro ones cost.. Another alternative i seen posted is to open up light and break off amber piece..just wondering if this will have same visual appearance ("will it look good") and also who should i go to do this (body shop, mechanic, etc??i live in NYC area) as I am not that mechanical so dont want to do it myself...I called bmw dealership and they told me they wont do this for me. which leads me to my last question of how much should i expect to pay a place to install angel eyes and also make my current headlights clear by breaking off amber piece etc... any advice on this will be greatly appreciated..

:welcome: Mike. There are lots of NYers here so you're in good company. Since you have the pre-facelift lights, I don't think there are any totally clear/white headlights unlike the newer X5's. The only option for you is to open up the lights and remove the amber pieces. Do a search here for "amber" or "angel eyes" and you will get enough information to make your head spin.

any good places around NYC that you know that will do this

Hey, just wondering if you know of any good places in or near manhattan that would do this for me at a reasonable price, install the angel eyes and remove amber piece.
Thanks,
Mike

Try Mobile Innovations in Lodi, NJ. They were one of the first places, if not the first, that we heard of doing the angel eyes retrofit on X5's. There are a couple of other places/people that do that as well. Custom Angel Eyes does this alsol. Search here for them.

clear ambers

thought i would join the thread because it is a little confusing :
everyone talks about the 'older' x5s (pre2003) being ok to bake and then take out the amber portion. this sounds very do-able.
the only uncertainty for me what do they mean when say 2003 model..does this mean production 2003 or car yr....i have seen a lot of poeple write in who have a 2003 yr X5 and they have settled for amber...
is there anyone that help with this important issue???????

well it means that if you have a MODEL year (not production year) of 2003, you're most likely to have the "cursed" headlight which has the super glue that BMW used it for that model year...

HEADLIGHT PRODUCTION DATE of 10/2002 and after have the super adhesive which is impossible to separate the lense portion of the headlight without damaging it....

so you're most likely to buy another set of pre-2002 headlights off ebay, or customangeleyes.com and get rid of the amber portion and whatnot (most people do this for Angel Eyes...and of course i bought a set of pre-2003 as well :D) OR you could just settle for amber...

i hope that clears things up :D

Mike,
Hi welcome to X5 World.

I have the same year X in Titanium 4.4i

I plan on doing this mod in the early spring in Long Island. Angel eyes and clear out. Plenty of info on X5world that I have all printed out and ready to rock. If your interested we can do both at the same time figure in April if you can wait. Got a new Kitchen Aid Oven to bake em in and all. Let me know.
I happen to be an Engineer so its seems to not be that difficult at all to DIY.

still lookin for place to install in NYC area

Hey All,
Thanks for your replies...and wayne if still havnt done them by April i would be interested in meeting up to do them....

I called Mobile Innovations in Lodi, NJ and they wanted to charge an arm and a leg for head light clear, and angel eyes..they told me it will be $1575 for this...Perhaps they are overcharging for the angel eyes??? I mean is it better to buy from someplace and then have a place install and also make headlight clear...correct me if im wrong but I figure installation of angel eyes probably is a 2-3 hour process, and also making clear is another hour or so, so thats 4 hours of labor (lets say $125 an hour for labor charges ) which should be like $500 and then angel eyes cost about $200, so should total charge be around $700, not $1575?? Could anyeone shed some light on a good place to get this done in NYC area that would do it for a reasonable price. Also, what angel eyes should I go with..and what other materials will I need to buy for making headlights clear.
Thanks,
Mike

want idea of how much angel eye install and clear should cost

Perhaps anyeone who paid to get angel eyes installed and also headlights cleared can post price paid...and whether it includes labor, or parts and labor...also where this can be done in NJ/NYC area.
Mike
