Can I lock it while engine is on?
Hello guys, just searched the forum but couldn't find an answer.
sometimes I need to lock my '02 X5 while keeping engine running, key is in switch, no one inside the car (to push the central locking button). What are my choices to do so? The reason why I want this: Here in Saudi Arabia, the weather is extremely hot & sun is very bright (and gas is cheap :D ). If you want to park for a minute (e.g. to buy something from market) and you switch it off, you'll find your leather seat burning when you come back! Now, if my wife is with me she can lock/unlock using center lock button. But if I'm alone I'll need to keep it running and locked. |
Weird need .. But I think a way to do it would be to buy a remote starter.. Then you can start the car while it's locked with a remote.

I don't think you can. It would defeat the purpose of the Anti-theft. The key needs to be removed from the ingnition in order to lock it. Just like you cant lock the drivers door with the central locking system if the door is open. Unless there is a coding option, I don't think it can be done.
You would have to carry both keys with you if you did get it working. |
well you can lock the car, before you close the door (while the engine is still running)... However, getting back in would be quite a problem...
this is why i mentioned remote start, because then you can have your key with you--and can unlock/lock the door as you please |

I tried it with the car on, hit the central locking, and 3 doors lock but not the drivers. -------- But I do agree with Naz. Use a remote start system or a turbo timer. With the remote start, you have to shut the car off and when you get out lock it, then start it again, but it accomplishes your task. A turbo timer works in the same way except, when you take the key out of the ignition, the switch is bypassed and the car is left on. From there you can lock it. When you are done, hop back in, turn the key to on then take off. I mean have you tried using 2 keys? (Assuming you have both.) Leave the one in the ignition and then the spare to lock it? I'm not sure if it will work because the ECU registers the one key. I mean I haven't tried any of these things, except the turbo timer on my Z32. I only had it on there because after hard pulls, I didn't want to oil to sit and burn up in the turbos and seize the bearings. Only other reason you want the car one and lock it,I would suppose is if you're gonna rob a bank and need a clean get away, but you want to lock the car so no one steals your whip while doing said robbery? |
Use the spare Carbon (Wallet key) to run the engine and the regular key to lock her up.

What about locking the car running and using the second key in the driver door lock to unlock? |
it is possible to lock yourself out of the car using the trunk hatch - have the engine run, lock all the doors, unlock the hatch (with a button or manual pull), kroll out the car, shut the hatch...
OP never asked about how to get back in, so, this procedure does exactly what the OP asked for - locks him out of the car. |
Can't you make the car start with the code thing?
That should leave your key available. Hmmm. |

when you push the button on the central console while the engine is running, all your doors lock (single locking, not double locking, the fuel door is still unlocked) when you unlock the hatch, the other 4 doors are still locked... engine running... you fall out the back of the truck... shut the trunk... voila!!!
engine running, all four doors are locked, the hatch is locked too, as it relocks after the hatch is shut... Why in the heck would someone want to do this??? |

I've updated the thread to clarify my intention. |
All right, so your best bet and cheapest route would be to use two keys. Leave one in the ignition and the spare to manually lock and unlock the X.
Other way is the use of a turbo timer. This way you just carry one key, but keeps the X running for a certain amount of time. |
Ever use the auxiliary ventilation function?

gotta move to a cold country, somewhere in Finland - when it is cold outside, and you are running a heater, when you jump outside for a quick errand, you just hit "REST" or the "MAX" on the newer cars, and the car stay heated inside with engine off...
BMW makes COLD COUNTRY PACKAGE and HOT COUNTRY PACKAGE... wonder, what those entail - special glazing on the glass for hot and some additional auxialary heaters for cold? like engine warmers by Webasto??? |
Just leave it unlocked. It'll be there when you get back inshallah

Here is my though and I'm not sure if it work. You get in the rear seat, hit the cetral locking to lock all door. Open rear door to get out. Push the lock down and close the door. Should it lock? :dunno:
