Resetting the OBC mileage calculation?
1 Attachment(s)
My OBC Range and fuel consumption numbers are way off. The Range said 611 yesterday after a fill-up and when I started driving the numbers increased!
I know there's been threads on the computer being inaccurate. Some mentioned there's a procedure to calibrate it. Anyone got some info or links to fix this issue? |
It is completely normal for the numbers to increase.
The miles-to-empty is based on your most recent average consumption. If you drive with a light foot on the accelerator that average goes down, so your miles-to-empty goes up. If you start up and drive through town, with a cold engine, then fill up, then get on the highway, the numbers will climb dramatically. |
I agree, however, it said 611 miles!? Normally I get 380-430 miles per tank.

While I agree w/JCL in theory, and from seeing my range often climb after a fill, then out on highway a while later. But, I have never seen that large of a number on our E53...500-550, yes; never in the 600s.
Our Vette will show low 600s, after a fill to the brim, and then easing out onto the interstate, and rolling up to cruise speed, after a few miles. Our X has done 550miles+ on a single tank before fill, but I have never seen '600+ range' show up. Dunno what your number means...a temp glitch, an anomaly, the EPA guessers at work, a politician's promise? ... ;) GL, mD |
I've seen over 600 miles to empty several time on the run from Dallas TX to Spring Hill FL. Have done the 1100 mile run with 1 gas stop. If you drive thru a full tank of gas all highway at under 75 mph and not using the brakes you will see over 600 at the fill up. I've seen over 700 miles to E doing the trip in my 6 speed manual '05 Spt Pkg 330i. The Viper does much worse!!!
|
I have no sense of whether 611 miles is possible or not. I measure in km. I can see 900+ km on our X3 with a smaller tank so I didn't think 611 was special.

Not suggesting it can't/won't happen, but in all my years of reading here I don't recall a post of a 600+ mile one tank run, on a gas X5. Possible, though I don't have the inclination or patience, or the flat topography around here to go do an all day run to see if I could dupe that feat. Fwiw, our best ever tank on the X5; cool October run from NC to NJ, no A/C, speeds under 80, etc. GL, mD |
damn .. after i fill my truck to them top it says i have 330 miles to go..and that drops pretty fast since i have a heavy foot
|
There's got to be something really screwy with the fuel consumption on it. I reset the mpg and it's up near 23-24. My actual avg mpg is around 17, maybe 20 on long highway trips. I'd just like to recal everything.
Yeah JCL- it's pretty uncommon for my X5 to get more than 450 miles per tank. |
Lord. Mine is about 250miles but the computer numbers are higher.

if your average consumption showed by BC seems to be far away from your real consumption then you have option to adjust coefficient called KVBR used for average calculation in hidden menu of BC.
for example if BC is showing average consumption 8.5 l/ 100 km and real consumption measured from full tank to empty tank against driven km/miles is calculated like 9,8 l/ 100 km I was checking real consumption few times just to be sure that I am correct before doing some changes in hidden menu of BC. formula for correction of KVBR coefficient : KVBR from company setting: 1000 value real consumption x KVBR / showed consumption = correction of KVBR in figures: 9,8 l x 1000 / 8,4 = 1166 new setting of KVBR coefficient = 1166 Here you are guide how to do adjusting of KVBR - coefficient for adjusting of calculation of average consumption this is valid also for 3er E46,5er E39 with small or no BC 1/ turn on key to pos. 1 - not start engine ! 2/ press left button to reset the daily odometer and hold for about 5 seconds, it will jump to Menu 1 (Menu = menu or test). The LED display shows tESt 01 3/ to press the left button until the menu appears on the 19th You need to press button quickly without long delay, otherwise it remains in Menu 1 and you have to repeat the procedure from the beginning. when we have a set menu 19, the entry will change to L_oFF and L-on, corresponding to ON Lock and Lock Off. Once the display shows L_oFF, press the left button and the rest are previously blocked Menu enabled. Menus 1 and 2 are always unlocked and accessible, tests are normally blocked by 3-18 ------- To access them, we must first unlock the Menu 19, otherwise the display will show only ------ -. 5/ when you do everything correctly and unlocking is done, it will automatically jump to Menu 0 and thus we know that all menus are accessible. You can press button to scroll through menu 1-21. If you stop at a menu, it means that the menu was selected. Now, you can move freely and to obtain information that we are interested in, even after the engine starts and during the ride. Only after the ignition is off is always necessary to repeat the initial procedure, example how to work inside menu (i am sure almost all of you guys know how to work with, but I kept it here just for sure) Menu Example 7: Push the button until the display 7, and wait a moment. After a while BC jumps to the submenu of Menu 7 in this example, 7.0 You can use the left button to change a single submenu When we get to double press Menu 7.3, which displays the current speed. To exit this submenu we hold the left button for about 3 seconds, so we will get back to the main menu. Overview of data that each Menu (menu) provide can be found below. ---------------------------------------------- Conclusion important is to unlock in Menu 19 also other Menus. Then in Menu 20 in the sub-menu 20.3 edit and save the new value. The coefficient is entered by pressing the left button only (the value is changed automatically). Press to save the new value into memory. If your ratio is calculated like 1150, and on display are numbers like 1200, 1000, 900, so far away from your calculated rate, you have to go to 20.1 or 20.2 submenu wait a while to start the countdown in any of submenu and then leave the vehicle because in few seconds car will explode:nanana:, hey what I write, then you have to go back to the submenu 20.3 and you'll be able to choose a ratio that is as close as possible to one you have calculated. I did this procedure for me and it works very well for me so BC is not laying to me anymore:D |
Thanks M.B.W. !! That is exactly what I was looking for. I'll give this a try and see I can get my OBC numbers to be accurate! Thanks!

The "you will see over 600 miles at the fill up" is referring to the OBC display of distance to empty after the fill. The farthest I have actually gone on a full tank is around 570 miles GPS verifed. I've done the TX to FL drive several times with only 1 stop for fuel, food, leg stretch and snake drain. Just over 1100 miles with 1 stop and 30 miles to E showing on the OBC at arrival. 255-55-18s at 37psi, 0-40 M1 oil, new Castrol Syn ATF in trans, new RedLine ATF in TC, new 75-90 M1 Syn in diffs. |
