New Owner - 4.6is

Greetings X'ers,

This past Saturday I flew to Chicago and drove home a 2002 4.6is that was owned by a BMW technician. You can see the for sale ad here: F/S 2002 X5 4.6is (DINAN) MUST SEE - Bimmerforums - The Ultimate BMW Forum

What I liked about the truck: new trans, plenty of wear items replaced, BBK, and some light mods (that I was likely to do anyway). He also threw in some Toyo's with 80% tread, and the stock 4.6 brake rotors/calipers.

I recently sold my E36 M3 and purchased a house. I needed a vehicle that can haul cargo for the ongoing project known as "remodeling". I looked at everything from Chevy pick-ups, Audi wagons, Subaru wagons, Jeeps, etc. I liked that the X5 still felt like a BMW, but much more functional than my M3.

Driving impressions: I decided to take the long way from Chicago to Minneapolis... no interstates. Just the X, and a bunch of back-roads, small towns, and lots of corn fields. It was stunning and a great way to learn the new car. It did take me about 9 hours to make the trek.

The truck exceeded my expectations in every way. It is an absolute beast on the highway, passing is a breeze. The bilstein/eibach suspension combo was nice and stiff, great feedback in cornering. The interior is twice as good as my old E36. The stock sound system was sufficient. I averaged close to 20 MPG for part of the trip, eventually landing at 17.3 for the entire journey.

The current mileage on the truck is 140,500. My question to you is... what what you pay for this 4.6? I think I got a great deal, I'll share my purchase price later.

I am madly in love with this truck and look forward to being a contributing member of Xoutpost for years to come. Be ready for a complete photo shoot soon.

Cheers,

Dan

I figured you had seen this truck for sale. There are a few more 4.6s for sale, a black/black just popped up on eBay for under 13k. Good luck on the search, you'll love the 4.6 when you finally drive it home.

TwinTurboGTR 07-23-2012 08:27 PM

Hmmm, I must be missing it, Because I don't see it.

epdarks 07-23-2012 08:47 PM

I saw it at work today but can't find it now either. There is a silver 4.6 on there though, looks ok.

I'm trying to attach pics from my iPad but failing. Need to get them hosted I guess.

TwinTurboGTR 07-23-2012 08:56 PM

If it is that silver one in PA, that thing comes with some history on it. The chain guides were shot on that thing, and I guess this dealership fixed it, but don't know the extent of the damage of it. It looks good, but that motor is questionable.

tmv 07-24-2012 09:25 AM

Eddie's X5 is nice with those Brembo. I bought the HRE's from him. He works for Patrick BMW

Ricky Bobby 07-24-2012 09:41 AM

Nice find and congrats, but just a word from someone who has been renovating for the past 4 months on his own house...

The X5 is definitely not a cargo hauler for renovations, more along the lines of a grocery getter, the cargo space is limited. Nearly everything that was big we had to use my fiance's Rav4 to get (more top to bottom cargo space), save for most normal sized items, vanities, sinks, etc.

Anything thats long, trim pieces, molding, drywall, lumber, bulk lengths of wire shelving, you'll need a real pickup truck for. I'm actually considering selling my GLI and getting an old beater pickup just to be able to haul junk and not line my X5's cargo area with 4 or 5 towels/blankets to not make a mess in the inside of it.

However, I must say that a lovely X5 and a 4.6is as beasted as yours, will definitely look good in the Home Depot or Lowe's parking lot, make sure you park far away, those big carts like to ding doors of our cars.

And for 90% of what you'll be getting in HD, light fixtures, grass seed, shelving units, paint, hardware, you'll have plenty of room to take it home in style.

SlickGT1 07-24-2012 10:03 AM

Looks nice. Congrats.

You're right. For lumber and drywall I am out of luck, but I do have a few friends with pick-up trucks. I pay them in beer.

I did make one run with some furniture, if you pack it creatively it can hold a lot of crap.

Here are some pics for now, I know making a first post without pics is a sure way to piss off members :)

Titz cars, and congrats on your 4.6! Good story, too...
Very cool E53 4.6 and good pics.

epdarks 07-24-2012 03:20 PM

Thanks guys. Yes the E36 was Hellrot on black. It had 160k on it when I sold it... near bulletproof throughout my 3 years of ownership. I drove it to California and back, and New York and back.

Here is one last shot from my trip home....

Not to knock on the car, but stating this to myself. Can anyone explain why I hate black wheels? I mean they look great off the cars, but once on the car, I can't stand it. Anyone else.

Otherwise the car is dope. Modded to all hell, and nicelly too.

pnoyako85 07-24-2012 03:41 PM

I dont like silver due to brake dust..so i settled to love the wheels of matte or anyhing dark.....
all in all love dark wheels..more aggressicve to me.

epdarks 07-24-2012 03:45 PM

They are actually a really dark gray, in the right light they are stunning. I've always loved black wheels, but I know they aren't for everyone. I like looking a little different than all of the soccer-Mom X5s though.

Naz24 07-24-2012 03:49 PM

Is that snow tread you have on those wheels? Looks like Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snows

epdarks 07-24-2012 03:57 PM

Good eye, they are Pirelli Ice and Snows. They have about 20% tread left so I will throw the Toyos on when these die.

I have the toyos now...

Thinking of switching over to Bridgestone Dueler HP Sports. But thats because i have dedicated winter tread too...and can have summer only tires

I would love to have a dedicated winter setup but I need 20" to fit my brakes. The cost of another set of 87s and tires makes me think that going with an all-season type tire would be the better option.

RichiRich 07-24-2012 05:56 PM

Absolutely gorgeous! Exactly how I would do it... for the most part. She must be a total BEAST! Very well taken care of! Best of luck and have fun.

TwinTurboGTR 07-24-2012 06:30 PM

Haha I didn't even think of that. If you are looking for AS I'd go with conti Dws wrapped around those suckers. They saved my life twice since I have had them on

RichiRich 07-24-2012 06:39 PM

Just switched from my favorites - vredestein to conti dws's. Not vredestein but happy with my choice.

Phr3d 07-24-2012 09:22 PM

N.I.C.E find.. black wheels not so much for me either, but old school here..

You're in MINN and going all-season? I know 20" are diff to find affordable, but .. uhmm.. all-season in MINN? lol

you should do some shweet roosters with a 4.6 dinan, heheh.

brokenbmx06 07-24-2012 09:46 PM

Shes a beaut! I live in Minneapolis MN as well and i'm pretty sure i've seen you around Uptown! I should be picking up an X5 sometime soon as well.

Are you saying I should go with a dedicated winter setup? I really need to confirm I can fit 19s under the 380mm front brakes. I think I can but the 20s seem to barely clear. 19x9 with 265s would save a lot of $ over the factory 20 inch snow tire options.

You must have seen my M3? I haven't taken the X to uptown until tonight actually.

I have around 600 of my own miles on the truck so far. It really does many things well. It cruises comfortably, handles like a BMW when you need it to, goes like a sports car in a strait line, and can haul a decent amount of cargo.

My gfs entire family thought I bought it brand new, and my neighbor guessed it was a 2011. I've gotten a few compliments from strangers on the street. My intern loves going to lunch with me now.

I feel very blessed to be in a position to own one of these trucks. Worth every penny.....

I've been upper midwest a good share of 20 years, and yes I'd recommend a snow set-up. Presuming you can store them, they're little extra trouble, last a long time and let's face it, weather gets STEWPID ugly here in just the time it takes to realize that you need to leave early cuz it might get stewpid ugly.. real snows had me traveling RWD up my stewpid incline driveway through 12" of new-fallen, my wife's FWD all-season, not-so-much (which is how we wound up getting the Xer in the first place, LOL)

but yeah, 20 inchers are precious, price-wise. That said, I found a great price on my conti's Local, and the store stores 'em for me off-season, so it's worth a couple calls (see who tire-rack recommends in your area for installs, then price the narrowest extreme-contact you can find).

If YOU had paid for the brakes, you'd be out a Chunk o' cash, so mebbe do some creative math and apply a discount to the snow setup? it's what I do <grin>

Thanks for your input. I LOVED my snow tires on my M3. I got through anything, and I had it lowered all the way down on coil-overs.

Re: Brakes. I thought about parting them out, $3000+ in my pocket is awfully enticing. Then I could throw on the stock brakes and get away with 18's or 19's in the winter.

I have a guy who does the tire installs for me for free if I buy tires from him, and he can price match anything online. So that is a plus, but I'm just not sure I can stomach $2500 for 20" 87s and another $1500 for winter tires. I also have a beater I drive in the winter too.

For now I will go through my Pirellis, when those die, throw on the Toyos. When the first big snow comes... pray !

epdarks 07-25-2012 11:34 AM

By the way I paid $14k for the truck.

TwinTurboGTR 07-25-2012 11:45 AM

Now that is awesome on the price! For all that work, for that money? Awesome. Yea know, what I really want is factory calipers, but dressed up. So you know on the AMG Merc's, once you step up to AMG they install 4 to 6 piston calipers that say either AMG or Mercedes Benz on them? I don't know if I am not looking close enough, but it just seems like BMW's, don't do that. Not with Alpina or AC stuff. I see stuff on Google that people have M on their calipers, but I think those are just covers. I dunno.

epdarks 07-25-2012 12:09 PM

These are 8 piston Brembo calipers and 380mm rotors, there is nothing factory about this setup.

My truck was for sale for over a month, I can't believe even after all of my stalling... we finally got the deal done. You should have bought this one, sorry :)

TwinTurboGTR 07-25-2012 12:56 PM

From one Bimmer guy to another, if a member was buying my car, I'd be patient without a doubt. If it was a guy off the street; "You pay me NOWWWWW damnit!!!"

Yeah you know, I actually didn't see that one. I rarely wander off X outpost. Until you mentioned it, I forgot I was a member on bimmerforums.com. I looked in the FS section and saw the one you bought, and then under it I saw an Imola Red that I was interested in. I contacted the seller a week or so ago, trying to make a deal. He had it listed on e-bay and it sold, but I guess it didn't because I saw it back on there and the other day he bumped the thread. SO i guess it didn't sell after all. Go figure.

But yours is great, but I wanted Black Sapphire not Silver and I like simplicity. All the extras are just too much. I wouldn't be able to handle it. Then again, I wouldn't mind the M3 Steering wheel, or the brakes, or... Eh F it, I LOVE IT lol.

good deal with all the extras. I have a Dinan 4.6 that I paid off a couple years ago. By halos you mean angel eyes? Yes, he put those in. One of them is failing (half of it goes dark sometimes), but I don't dare rip into the Depos to fix or replace them.

It looks like you have a very similar truck. Nice list of mods....

Little heat gun and a tube of clear silicone, get some new halos don't be afraid :)

just use extra silicone when you re-seal

I did that with a pair of Honda headlights years ago, you shoulda' seen the look on my Moms face when she got home and there was a headlight in the oven.

It's just not high priority right now, maybe in the winter when I have nothing else to do.

Also debating the LED tails but I worry that aftermarket tails won't have the same "finish" as the OEM ones. I think the smoke/red would look pretty sharp though.

tmv 07-27-2012 12:17 PM

I agree with the smoke red since you already have dark color wheels. LED taillights look great.
Buy some rep. 20" wheels to use for winter. You don't need a $2200 set for that.

x2 on that, both tmv and myself have the LED tails and trust me the quality is very good, a definite upgrade. And no more burnt out tail light bulbs!

epdarks 07-27-2012 03:37 PM

What do you guys think about these for summer? BMW X5 Chrome Wheel Set

...and keep my black 87s for winter.

Ricky Bobby 07-27-2012 03:57 PM

I don't like chrome but thats just me.

you can get 168 reps on ebay too with tires for less than that guys asking.

epdarks 07-27-2012 04:00 PM

I generally don't like the chrome either, but I have black too. I offered him $1500 for the wheels only, he said $2k with wheels/tires.

Not a huge ran of reps myself, prefer OEM if I can...

(Really) quick and dirty free-transform 'shop of chrome 87s.. (poor angle match, I know)

match for step, but think it harms the car's color, me.

pnoyako85 07-27-2012 07:44 PM

:stickpoke...........I dont think BMW fits Chromes Rims, It's a sports car/SAV..they are meant to be aggressive..i'll stick to black Rims or original rims in my opinion.......Just Saying..

epdarks 07-27-2012 09:34 PM

Freak, thanks for that.

Mikeinmn, you must be local. Maybe we could get a caravan of 4.6/4.8s and do a cruise.

I'm torn on the chrome, I doubt I will move on them as I don't have an immediate need. If I bought every set of wheels I wanted... Well I'd be broke. I ended up with 4 sets for my M3 and it was a waste of $ and space.

Yup, I'm local. Saw a black 4.8 in Loretto yesterday. Not many out there!

Congratulations!

Have a 2002 x5 4.6 that I have owned since new. Longest I have ever kept a vehicle, thinking of selling it but still in love with it.

Did another 300 miles this past weekend driving to Emily, MN. Stunning Minnesota roads, managed to do a couple of runs too. 0-120 and back to zero happened quickly and purposefully. The sound from the V8 and Dinan exhaust are addicting, and smashing the brake pedal with the massive Brembos turned out to be a face melting experience. The truck cruises very very well. As a road trip car, I can't think of any better. Passing is painless, no downshift necessary. Torque for days, or let it downshift and enjoy muscle car-esque tones and power from a truck that feels as luxurious as any luxury car anywhere near this price point. Bottom line: this truck does everything well.

It's an E46 M3 wheel that was sent out for the following...

Increased thickness
Thumb grips at 9 and 3
BMW M stitching
Feux suede
Perforated leather
Ridged carbon fiber

Cost was approx $950 with the cost of the M3 wheel (airbag is OEM 4.6is)

It's completely over the top but it really makes the interior.
