Air Spring / Shock Absorber Question
Well, it happened to me. Looks like the front driver's side is sagging. Time for new airbags. I know it was only a matter of time, so i am not that bummed about it. From what I read on this forum, the DIY doesn't seem that bad. I think I'll film a DIY video for you guys.
My question though is if I buy a new air spring from Arnott, that is just the spring. If I a buy a new strut assembly, does that include the shock absorber? I don't mind swapping and getting a new SA, as mine are probably original at 112K.
Thanks! JP |
You can buy either just the air spring or a complete remanufactured strut. Many guys here use the arnott rebuilt units with positive results.
As far as i know its a straight R&R with no recoding as long as you do not have the "air susp. inac." message. |

Correct.

Thanks guys, this was helpful. I'll upload a air strut replacement video DIY guide this weekend.

Next question, if I swap out my rear shocks for new ones, do I need to do an alignment?

When you change ride height is when you need an alignment. |
Cool. I figured that, but just wanted to ask the experts...
Another one for ya, I noticed there are two different sized Dampers on REALOEM, one is 80mm and one is 90mm, part number 33536751030 and 33536762407 any idea which is the correct size? Diagram here: RealOEM.com * BMW E53 X5 4.8is SINGLE COMPONENTS FOR REAR SPRING STRUT |

I don't really know but double-check with the dealer. I wonder if the correct one comes with the shock? Funny but for the 3.0 they list the same part numbers. If it had the Sport suspension only = 90mm. If it had the Sport AND 2-axle self level suspension = 80mm. So, going by that the correct one would be 80mm. However, was the 2-axle self-level suspension available with 3.0s?! The rear yes but both axles? :dunno: And another thing, why do they list both 90mm and 80mm for the 4.8?! Maybe someone here will be able to explain. Sorry, I know its not much help. Calling mrbmwx5! |
