SES Light Finally Goes Off - P0344

Update: 8/12

Replaced the CPS with the genuine BMW parts from BMW Bloomfield NJ. Works so far so good.

Hey Guys,

Long time no see. Insanely busy taking care of the newborn lately. Well, while I was thinking what a fantastic job my 01' X5 3.0i is doing transporting my boy, now it threw me a beautiful SES light.

Checked with local Advance Auto Part. P0344 - Camshaft Positioning Sensor "A" Circuit Signal Intermittent (B1)

Past symptoms: 3 time last year plus 2 times this year, the engine will stall at low speed, sometimes happened over a speed bump, at very low speed, then SES light up. And the car lost all the power. Since it's low speed, I could just take control and start it up again, problem gone.

Yesterday, while I was driving, the SES light lit up, but the car is still running strong. No sign of lost power. Read the code, P0344.

1st round of research, I gotta replace the Intake camshaft sensor, correct? I just want to be sure the symptoms match the code, and you guys' advice is greatly appreciated.

Gotta feed the baby, but I'll check back tomorrow. Any idea or suggestion, please leave a feedback. Again, thanks!

Best,
Lei

Hey Lei!

Yup! classic signs of the CPS failing. Easy DIY as I did both on the wife's 03 3.0 a couple weeks ago.

LeiZ 08-08-2012 08:23 AM

Hey, Big "J", thanks a lot for the confirmation. I was trying to be cheap just to change the exhaust side first, since it's much cheaper. :D But looks like let's do it once and do it right!

Will order the part from Bavauto today. Do you think JL Germany Brand is equally as good as Genuine BMW brand? $40 difference. (Being cheap again.)

Thanks,
Lei

Hi Big "J",

Is it possible that it's the Exhaust CPS?

Hi Lei!

You can just change the one for now and see if you still have the same problem. I bought Febi/ Bilstein CPS units but, Bosch is the choice for most.

Good Luck!

LeiZ 08-08-2012 10:43 AM

Thanks! I'll order the intake one today, and keep you posted.

I would ONLY use Bosch (or BMW) parts..... I have had reports of low quality 3rd world copies which are very low quality.

And you CANNOT know where they were made based on the BS 'euro/German sounding' names the market under....

LeiZ 08-08-2012 01:55 PM

Thank you, Sir. I almost placed the order for the JL Germany brand. Sounds like I'd better off ordering the genuine BMW parts from bavauto.com

One question: Anywhere else has lower price than Bavauto? Their price is $108 + $12 Shipping, which is $120 total.

Thank you!

Give Craig at Bloomfield BMW a call or email him. He has beat every price, on every part, that I have purchased.

Told you. They are absolutely insane with the pricing, and their stock is also insane. I ordered all of my coolant hoses and expansion tank from him on Friday. He beat everyone's price by over $80. That is a tank of premium fuel. Hell yea. And a guy of his showed up at my house with all the parts today. It cost me $15 to ship it all. That is 3 days to my door.

LeiZ 08-12-2012 08:44 PM

Hi SlickGT1,

Craig is the man. received the parts in 2 days, genuine BMW parts, unbeatable price, put it on, works like a charm.

Next time you come to central CT, let me know.:stickpoke I really appreciate i.

Cheers!!!!

Sounds good. They are about 30 min away from me, and they supply the dealers here, so they actually hand deliver the parts to me. It is amazing service and dealership. Glad you are all fixed. Can't leave a fellow car guy on the side of the road.

LeiZ 08-13-2012 08:54 AM

That's right!

New update: The SES lights up again (I didn't clear the code), same code P0344, but this time one more code: P0455

Did I screw up? :dunno: Help, please.

Big "J" 08-13-2012 06:41 PM

LeiZ 08-13-2012 07:17 PM

I had the same problem, just went on ebay and choose one that stated
genuine BMW for $97 dollars, I installed it two day ago and thing seems
to be working excellent as it should. However check engine light used
to illuminate every day even after clearing it. So far, I've been droving
for more than 20miles and when I read the system, it says no fault code stored.
ATTN. when the system reads: Bank2 or A mal function, it is the driver side
I went without any doubt by changing the driver's side and problem solved!

Same here, MySweetX5. Problem solved after replacing with the genuine BMW part, driver side as well. So far has driven 800 miles :D, and no light illuminated.

cheers!!!!! :D
