Steering wheel vibration
I replaced my front and rear rotors and pads (about 3,000 miles ago). My wheels were also balanced roughly around the same time. I recently noticed that my steering wheel shakes slightly when I hit the brakes at around 55-65 mph, then it goes away. Does anyone have any suggestions? These are brand new rotors, so I don't know what it could be. Thanks.

How many miles are on her? Was the vibration present before the brake change? Does the vibration only occur if the brakes are hit at the 55-65 MPH range and not anywhere else?
Please put your X's info in your sig. Such as mine. |
Sounds like thrust arm bushes on the front suspension are worn.
|
What kind of rotors did you use?
|
Have your front rotors check out. Those are where i would start.

The vibration range is 55-65mph. I think Skier1 maybe right...I'm going to get the front suspension inspected next week...the bushings may be worn out. I bought my rotors from Bavarian Autosport. I will let you guys know how it turns out.

if its shaking and shuddering while braking, Tension/Thrust arms are shot, its the bushings that fail. You can either replace the whole arm at about 100 apiece, or the bushing for 35 but you have to press it in and out.
I did the former, replaced with Meyle HD bushings, tight as can be and no more shaking while braking. Also replaced wishbone control arms and ball joints for thrust arms while I was in there. Front end is like new |
seems like the bushings... does powerflex make those particular bushes?
|
It could be the bushing. They're rubber and tend to fail over time. You can replace just the bushing with polyurethane instead of rubber.

I think I have the same problem. I get a slight judder on the front wheels under breaking but when I brake hard it disappears. I dont think the rotors are warped as it would still judder even under hard braking. I had a look at my tension struts at the weekend and can see some very small cracks in the rubber bushes. If i grab hold of the tension strut and pull / push it i get between quater to half inch of movement. is this normal or should they be solid?
