iPod placement/Dension

Happy New Year !!!

Quickly hooked up the IceLink:Plus (chrissie present) and thought I'd run the cable through to the front during the rest of my holidays. Then I thought, 'Why not just leave it in the CD changer area?' I am using a surplus iPod mini and only need to take it out to update the playlists and if the car ever gets broken into it's less likely to get pinched. Does anyone know of any problems doing it this way?

No problems at all with doing it that way. Enjoy!!

That's exactly the same way that I installed it.
I bought a used 'junker' iPod on eBay, filled it with the my music library (40GB) and dedicated it to the X5. The only times I take it out are to add music or change playlists.

Happy 2006!

Me too. Hooked up the iPod and couldn't think of a good reason to run the cables through....then again, some call me a lazy bu**er

Do you have any pics of the install in the back. I can't seem to find any room back there. I don't want to run cables to the front either. Thanks.

This has been a popular quick install for the X5 crowd lately:

If you mount it up front the upper vents seems easier to get to. Had it down on the passenger side of shifter and it was difficult to see/use. Almost crashed! *Public Service Announcement* Don't use while driving. I still like the ipod interface as opposed to using playlists/head unit to control. Running the wire didn't take more than 15 minutes.

I don't care for this mount for a few reasons:

1) Heat blowing on it when the heater is on. That can never be good.
2) If an airbag was to deploy. Now you have an iPod being used as a projectile.
3) Unwanted attention from outside when vehicle is unattended.

Point taken - different strokes but I do believe it sits behind the air bags being that it's directly above radio and I have just kept that side of vent closed. It is in pretty plain view unless you have dark windows or pull it out of the cradle whenever you're parked in the public. If you like the head unit interface there's no reason to have the ipod within reach.

Agreed. I think the head unit interface stinks myself and have mine mounted on the vent as well.

How come the vent is still open in the picture?

The problem with a dash mounted IPOD is that whenever you park, you must remove the ipod, then if someone's checking out which cars to pull a "smash and grab", he'll notice you have an IPOD cradle (which screams "IPOD INSIDE!) and assume there's an ipod in your glove box and break in.

Thanks Tom. I thought about that but I wasn't sure if the cover would fit over the ipod. I will do it this weekend. I appreciate the help.

There was a similar topic earlier on. I put my ipod above the CD changer. Didn't want to get rid of the changer incase I wanted to reconnect. No regrets

I saw your install Ajogu but there is a small silver module installed above my Nav Unit. Not sure what it is (Phone module?) so it won't fit there.

What is the blue deal above the iPod? I haven't seen that in my installs.

It's a warning triangle box. A big "gotta have" over here according to road rules, amongst other things.

"yeowzer", don't think its the phone, cause I've got a phone too and it ain't there :dunno:

yeowzer 01-04-2006 04:48 PM

Its the Voice Recognition module and it doesn't leave room to mount it above the DVD Nav. So I will go with Tom's suggestion. I can't wait to get it installed.
