If it were me, I would repair it from a reputable shop. Once dont, it would be almost as new but cheaper than buying new. But if I were to replace the tranny, I would buy new. Buying used with 90K+ mi, what warranty do you have? You wont know how much life that tranny has left.

I'm having a similar problem on my 04 4.4 with 107,xxx miles. I do not think its my tranny though (was replaced 25k miles ago).. Could it be in your drive shaft somewhere? Get a mechanic to check it out

Thanks for the advice, I would go new but then we're talking $4k+ which is doable, however a bit hard to swallow.

I'm not 100% sure no, however in 5th the X kinda chugs at lower speeds. The vehicle kind of hesitates and then lurches forward slightly. Nothing violent but definitely noticeable. Downshifting to 4th was taking care of this, and the vehicle would just run at a slightly higher RPM, however its now beginning to show signs of the same issues.

I'll have to get it on a lift and see if there is anything we can determine at my local shop. Thanks

BTW...When you replaced your tranny did you get a used one or brand new?

I was extremely lucky to catch the tranny issue a month before my CPO warranty ended... OEM Installed by BMW dealer, I believe they use "refurbished" ones....

Sounds like it could possibly a torque converter versus the entire transmission. Have someone that knows BMW check it out.

Yes, if you catch the tq converter before it ruins the trans then you'll save yourself a couple grand.

Not at the moment, I guess I should have mentioned...

Several times it has gone into TRANS. FAILSAFE PROG, where the dash lights come on. The X drives very "off" and I very carefully get it home and let it sit. After period of "x amount of time" sometimes day/s / sometimes a few hours I restart the vehicle and it is gone, back to normal, no lights and X drives like before (still with 5th slipping).

Silly question... It would be wise to purchase a New OEM tq converter?

I would find a reputable trans shop and have them diagnose it. Or at least get it scanned by someone who is familiar with the scanner and transmissions.

Sounds like you'll need tranny/drivetrain work anyways. So unless you're going to DIY ...

I definitely would not just buy a torque converter.

I had mine diagnosed and let them keep it overnight. They could not replicate the problem. They refused to charge me for anything.

I slipped the guy $20 anyway when I went to pick it up.

Also, if it was me I would go the rebuild route. It's a little less than the remanufactured and you don't have to worry about any coding.
