Removing roof rails?

I saw this post on the X3 forum. And wondered, maybe my 4.8 would look good without them, i know im deff not ever going to use them and i kind of want that sleek/clean look.

i tried taking them off but the torx bolts are on there very tight i think i need an air compressor tool or something.

Has anyone else tried removing these on their X?

Edit: Maybe suggestions/opinions on this mod:dunno:

Here's a picture of Jack Osbourne's X5 without the roof racks. Anybody know how much it brought on eBay?

I know the buy it now price was $115,000. Don't know how much it ended up going for. Did he donate the cash to charity? I hope so--what a tool!

I asked that same question a while back never heard from anybody,Jack's X looks pretty damn nice withouth them. I know for sure it can be done, the only problem is if you do remove them you will have four holes up there that would need to be seal afterwards.

Who the heck knows what he did with the money...it's probably up his nose. I remember hearing the Buy It Now was $115,000, I wonder how much it really brought....

Looks funny from front in my opinion. Gives it a minivan-ish look. :) More pics.

I think it looks better with out. I also think Jacks looks hot, but that body kit in the front looks like crap to me. I think that just over does it and takes away from the class and adds too much rice affect to it. But to each his/her own.

AlpineMsix 01-03-2006 01:32 PM

i like it, seems more "Aero-dynamicish" lol now how can i take them off damn it, the bolts are in there soo tight! And i dont have an air compressor tool or anything :(

superH 01-03-2006 01:45 PM

To me it looks more like a car without the roof racks.

Breaker bar.....or get out the ratchet and find a long pipe.

those seem like m5/m3 mirrors, id wanna see them on a normal X. Also if they are m5 mirrors i wonder if the m5 mirrors can hook up straight to our X5's/

BMERGRL 01-12-2006 09:03 PM

I like it w/ them on. I agree it does give it more of a mini-vanish look w/ them off.

I would looooooove to see some side mirrors w/ the turning lights in them....I mean come on there can be angel eyes out there but no one thought of putting the turning markers in the side mirrors???? Common Guys...someone do it and then get someone to sell them.

Group buy????

I believe they can fit but you loose the auto-folding feature.

f355b 01-13-2006 08:47 AM

I agree having turn signals on the mirrors are cool but they're a MB thing. Being a bimmerphile I would never do such a thing.....copying anything from MB.

What year did the auto folding feature on the side mirrors become available, I have a 2001 4.4i. No auto folding feature, manual only.

Breyton... I'm w/ ya' I dont want to copy anything from that 'ugly duckling'. However I don't believe those mirrors are strickly a MB thing. I mean we have Honda's that are now coming w/ them standard from the factory. Acura has had them for a couple years and a lot of other manuf. are putting them on the vehicles OEM.

Not only do they say "Welcome the the 21st Century" from an esthetics point of view but they're also a nice lil' safety feature to add to the already....very safe X. I mean it really couldn't be that hard to add a lens and bulb...wiring is already there.

..are you telling me that you wouldn't put them on the X5 if they were available as an aftermarket or OEM on future models? ....

Nope! Call me stubborn but personally I refuse to copy anything from MB although many other manufacturers have them now as you said. Copying MB is a cardinal sin in my book.
And to think I also drive a MB. ;)

.......Okay then....I get 'dibs' on Breyton's turn signal mirrors in the future!!! :) :)

I believe it started from 2003. I have seen a article on the main page for a DIY for adding that feature to 2001 X5s. Although I have heard that the motor for auto-folding is not that powerful and breaks after few months if you use everyday .
