4.6is Fan Clutch Conundrum
 

I ordered recently a new fan clutch for my 03 4.6is. The number in REALOEM is 17417505109. I ordered a BEHR of the same number. Pull out my clutch and it is the original BMW BEHR but is part# 11527500339. This clutch is thinner and has uses 3 screws at the rim to mount the fan vs the new one which uses 4 screws to the back of the case.

Looking up my original fan number in REALOEM it comes up as a fan clutch for an E38 750iL :confused:

could it be an early production 4.6is? what is the date of manufacture?

The design was updated. The clutches used to seize.

Vin LN80253. A 02/ 2003 production date.
Went back through REALOEM and it is the same. It does make note that it is only to be used with a certain fan which has the 4 screw, back mount. I wonder if there was a recall or something to that effect.

I'm getting kind of irritated with this. I got the clutch and borrowed a clutch tool from a mechanic buddy. Turned out I grabbed his Mercedes tool and he is now out of town. Tried to find one locally, couldn't. Tried a universal, didn't work. Tried to make one, but I used aluminum stock since I had it and it broke. Ordered the tool, just got it, and what should be a 20 min job... find the part is not correct. Thanks guys, I just needed to get that off my chest.

Really? 03 production date and its got that kind of clutch on it? My 4.4 is an 01 production and has the same clutch. Was the 3 bolter and "New and Improved" design that failed.

Nothing for nothing, I didn't have the fan clutch tool and I thought I HAD to have it. But after getting the bolt off without it, I don't see it as necessary.
I figured if I needed it in a pinch, I would just rent it from Autozone. They have a MB/BMW fan clutch kit. It is $200.00, but you are renting it, so it is free to use.
