South Chicago Area Indy Needed
Hey guys. My search came up a little empty. Doing a "Dex" or "Google" search doesn't tell me much. I live in the south suburbs of Chicago. I have a few things I need to have done and looking for a decent shop. I thought I had found one, but they are no different than the stealership. Not to mention, I called to get a price on a wheel alignment and he said that depends on what mods I made. I said none, I have a 4.8is. He asked about the wheels, I said they have 20s on them. He said that may through it off a bit. I told him these are the size the truck came with. He said maybe, but they are different than what comes on the base truck. So I hung up.
So if anyone has a shop that they can suggest, I'd appreciate it. I'd prefer somewhere close to the south subs. Makes it easy to drop off and pick up. The work I'm getting done is: Upper control arms CV boot Door Carrier (may do myself) Future work: 100k maintenance Regular maintenance (coolants, oil, etc...) Thanks. |

Try APC in Arlington Heights, IL
I take all my & family cars and even friends take their cars to Chris @ Arlington Performance center. Chris was a head mechanic at MWerks and split from there to open his own about 10yrs ago. He is very reasonable and straight to the point no BSing. I know its a trip again for you but well worth the drive for a trusted shop. I just had my trans rebuilt and it drives like its new .
If you do go there ask for Chris and tell him Troosh (that's me) sent you..he will take care of you..GL  |
Thanks. R & N isn't too far. Was hoping for someone closer. Arlington is a bit of a trek. But its nice to have the info anyway. Someone else may be able to use them.

I ended up going to Four Seasons Auto in Alsip, IL. Very good work, very decent prices. The only thing is they don't have a wheel alignment shop. But they do get it close so you can drive to get the alignment.

Wolf, if you ever do call, ask for Mike. Great guy. I bought all of my parts myself. Got a CV boot, tie rod assembly, both upper control arms, 4 tires mounted and balanced, for under $700. Got the alignment from NTB for $125. Rennology wanted $560 just for the CV Boot. All said and done, they wanted $1300.

Additionally, they recommended changing the cabin filter and air filter at the following cost: air filter $31.60 plus $57.40 for install. Cabin filter $50.46 plus $64.40 for install. Brake fluid flush; fluid $70.16 labor $149.50 I just picked up the air filter for $12.92 and the cabin filter for $19.95 from autohausaz.com plus shipping. Thoughts? |
Common oil drip is the oil filter gasket between the oil filter housing and the engine block. Although the gasket is under 10 bucks, you must remove the radiator fan, radiator fan housing, serpentine belt and alternator in order to access the six bolts that holds the filter housing to the engine block. Over time the rubber gasket becomes hard as rock and no longer seal. The only way that I was able to remove the gasket was to use a heat gun to soften the gasket so that it would come off the aluminum housing. Took me about a half day to take it apart and put it back together. My mechanic wanted $500.00 to fix the leak. There's a youtube video on how to replace the gasket.

They're saying it's the timing chain cover & flange. I'm not disputing their findings, however their labor rates seem really high.
Additionally, I wasn't too thrilled with what they wanted to charge me for the filters and install. Obviously I'm doing that myself! |
Wolf....were those the quotes from Four Seasons?

No, Rennology...
